Jalen Anthony Rose (born January 30, 1973 in Detroit , Michigan ) is a retired American basketball player who was active in the NBA from 1994 to 2007 .
Since the end of his playing career, Rose has worked as a basketball commentator and analyst for the American sports broadcaster ESPN .
Career
college
After Rose attended Southwestern High School in Detroit, he moved to the University of Michigan . At the Wolverines he was one of the so-called Fab Five , which consisted of Chris Webber , Juwan Howard , Jimmy King and Ray Jackson, and reached the NCAA finals of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship in 1992 and 1993 .
NBA
Jalen Rose was selected as the 13th pick in the 1994 NBA draft by the Denver Nuggets , for which he completed two seasons. After the first, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team . In 1996 he joined the Indiana Pacers with Reggie Williams and a future first round pick in exchange with Mark Jackson , Ricky Pierce and a first round pick .
With the Pacers Rose reached the finals of the Eastern Conference in the 1997/98 season, where they were, however, subject to the Chicago Bulls . 1999/2000 Rose was the best points collector of his team and reached the NBA finals with them, which were lost to the Los Angeles Lakers . That season he was named NBA Most Improved Player .
During the following season, Rose joined the Chicago Bulls with Travis Best and Norman Richardson and a future second round pick in swaps with Brad Miller , Ron Mercer , Ron Artest and Kevin Ollie . With his experience Rose should lead the young players of the Bulls, which he did not succeed, not least because of the poor quality of the teammates. He had his statistically best time with the Bulls and scored 22.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists in the 2002-03 season . However, the team failed to qualify for the playoffs in Rose's time .
At the beginning of the 2003/04 season, Rose moved with Donyell Marshall and Lonny Baxter to the Toronto Raptors, where he was not particularly successful.
In February 2006 Rose was hired by the New York Knicks , who passed on Antonio Davis and an undisclosed transfer fee to Toronto. The low-peak time at the Knicks ended before the start of the 2006/07 season when the team released him from his contract at the end of October. In early November 2007, Rose signed a contract with the Phoenix Suns .
At the Suns, however, Rose didn't get a lot of playing time because he didn't seem suitable for the team's speed game and was also struggling with knee problems. After the 2007 season he ended his career.
