Juwan Antonio Howard (born February 7, 1973 in Chicago , Illinois ) is a retired American basketball player and current coach . The 2.06 meter tall Howard played in the NBA from 1994 to 2013 and was considered a player who had strengths in both attack and defense, as well as an intelligent player who could be used in multiple positions.

Career

college

During his college years at the University of Michigan , Howard became known as part of the Fab-Five (composed of Chris Webber , Jalen Rose , Jimmy King, Ray Jackson, and Howard). The Wolverines reached the NCAA finals of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship in 1992 and 1993 , but lost in both finals to Duke and North Carolina, respectively .

NBA

In the 1994 NBA draft , Howard was selected fifth by the Washington Bullets . Howard was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team for his first year performance . With the signing of Chris Webber in exchange for Tom Gugliotta , two of the Fab-Five were reunited in Washington. Together, the two formed a dangerous duo on the wing positions. In 1996, Howard became the first NBA player in history to sign a $ 100 million contract. The highlight was the 1996/97 season: Howard took part in the NBA All-Star Game and was elected to the All-NBA Third Team. After Webber moved to the Sacramento Kings for Mitch Richmond in 1998 , Howard became the team's new face. However, Howard degraded statistically. After Michael Jordan was the new manager of the Wizards, he transferred Howard in February 2001 to the Dallas Mavericks . During his time in Washington Howard scored 18.4 points, 7.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists on average.

Howard played alongside Dirk Nowitzki on the position of power forward . He convinced with 17.8 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. After you could win the first round against the Utah Jazz during the playoffs , you were eliminated in the following round against the San Antonio Spurs . In 2002 Howard was transferred to the Denver Nuggets , in 2003 to the Orlando Magic . Up until this point, Howard was a regular on every team and consistently scored 18 points and 7 rebounds per game. In 2004 he was swapped for the Houston Rockets with Tracy McGrady and other players for Steve Francis , Cuttino Mobley and Kelvin Cato . With McGrady and Yao Ming as primary attack options, Howard's average dropped to an average of 10 points and 6 rebounds per game over the next three years.

In 2007 he played again for Dallas and in 2008 for Denver. For both teams he was on the field for no more than seven minutes per game. After he was active in the 2008/2009 season with the Charlotte Bobcats , he moved to the 2009/2010 season as a free agent for the Portland Trail Blazers . Initially only signed as a substitute player, Howard got the chance for more playing time after Joel Przybilla's injury . In 73 games Howard scored 6.0 points and 4.6 rebounds in 22.4 minutes per encounter.

His last stop was the Miami Heat , with which he reached the NBA finals in 2011 , and then won the NBA championship with Miami in 2012 . After the season, Howard received no new contract with the Heat and received no contract offer from the other NBA teams. The end of his career has already been forecast in the media. Howard eventually kept fit on his own and returned to the Heat in March 2013, who offered him a 10-day contract. With the Heat he won the championship again in 2013, although Howard did not play a single playoff game. During the playoffs Howard acted already as quasi assistant coach of Erik Spoelstra .

Coaching

After the end of his playing career in 2013, he became a member of the staff in Miami as an assistant coach. In May 2019, his six-year tenure with the NBA team ended, Howard accepted the University of Michigan's offer to succeed John Beilein  as head coach.

Charity

Howard is involved in social projects. His foundation helps youth in Chicago and Washington DC . Howard has received numerous awards for his humanitarian work.
