Tracy Lamar McGrady Jr. (born May 24, 1979 in Bartow , Florida ), called T-Mac , is a retired American basketball player who was active in the NBA between 1997 and 2013 . McGrady was one of the best and most popular players in the world in the 2000s, and was the league's top scorer in the 2003 and 2004 seasons. In his career he was elected seven times to the NBA All-Star - and three times to the All NBA First Team . In September 2017, McGrady was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame .

NBA career

Toronto Raptors (1997-2000)

McGrady moved straight from high school to the NBA. He was selected ninth in the 1997 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors .

In his first two years with the Toronto Raptors, his points average was below ten points per game, which was mainly due to the fact that he was not on the starting line-up. In the 1998/99 season he played with his cousin Vince Carter , who was voted Rookie of the Year that year . McGrady made his breakthrough in the NBA in the 1999/2000 season . He was on the grid in 34 of 79 games and averaged 15.4 points per game. In the same year he was third in the Slam Dunk Contest behind Vince Carter and Steve Francis . Also in the 1999/2000 season , McGrady and Vince Carter led the Toronto Raptors to the NBA playoffs for the first time in their team history . However, they were defeated in the first round in three games against the New York Knicks . After the season McGrady, who stood in the shadow of his cousin Vince Carter with the Toronto Raptors, became a so-called "free agent" (= a player without a contract). He had expressed an interest in playing around his family and friends in his home state of Florida .

Orlando Magic (2000-2005)

On August 3, 2000 McGrady was in a "sign-and-trade" deal (exchange of a "contractless" player whose new team receives the rights to him and can sign him first) for a first-round pick exchanged the Orlando Magic . In Orlando he played with Grant Hill , one of the best guards in the NBA at the time . Grant Hill contracted an ankle injury and could only play four games in the 2000/01 season , giving McGrady the chance to lead the team. This led to his first participation as a starter for the Eastern Conference in an All-Star Game . As a reward for his breakthrough, he was awarded the NBA Most Improved Player Award at the end of the season - an award for the player who was able to improve the most in the league compared to the previous year. Despite McGrady's increase, the Orlando Magic lost to the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round of the 2000/01 NBA playoffs .

In the following season, McGrady's performance continued. McGrady was re-elected to the NBA All-Star Game and at the end of the season in the All-NBA First Team . His points average this season was 26 points per game. At the end of the season it was again not enough for the second round of the NBA playoffs, as the Orlando Magic had to admit defeat to the Charlotte Hornets in the first round .

In the 2002/03 season , McGrady increased his points average to 32.1 points per game and secured the NBA Scoring title, the award for the player with the highest points average of the season. He was the youngest player since the NBA's merger with the ABA to win this award. Despite these personal bests, it was not enough for the second round of the NBA playoffs again. The Orlando Magic had played out a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series against the Detroit Pistons in the first round of the NBA playoffs of the 2002/03 season , but lost the following three games.

In the 2003/04 season McGrady again won the NBA Scoring Title with a points average of 28 points per game, and in the same year, on March 10, 2004, his career best of 62 points in a game against the Washington Wizards . With this achievement, he became only the fourth player in the last twelve years to score over 60 points in a game.

Houston Rockets (2005-2010)

On June 29, 2004, Tracy McGrady, Juwan Howard, Tyronn Lue and Reece Gaines were sent to the Houston Rockets in a seven-player trade . For these four players, the Orlando Magic received Steve Francis , Cuttino Mobley and Kelvin Cato . With his new teammate Yao Ming , McGrady finished the 2004/05 season in fifth place in the Western Conference . On December 9, 2004, McGrady scored 13 points in the last 33 seconds in a game against the San Antonio Spurs by converting four consecutive threesomes - although in one case he was fouled on the throw. The Houston Rockets won this game with 81-80. Although he scored an average of 30.7 points, 7.4 rebounds and 6.7 assists in the NBA playoffs this season (2004/05), it was again not enough for the second round. The Houston Rockets had to admit defeat to the Dallas Mavericks in seven games .

McGrady in a duel with Caron Butler (2006)

At the start of the 2005-06 season , McGrady missed eight games due to back cramps. On January 8, 2006, he was rushed to hospital halfway through a game against the Denver Nuggets because of severe back pain . Even so, he was re-elected to the All-Star Game.

The 2006/07 season began similarly to the previous one. McGrady missed seven games because of back cramps. Yao Ming was the Houston Rockets' first option at the time, but had to sideline himself due to a severe leg injury. McGrady improved greatly during this time and re-established himself as one of the best players in the NBA by leading the Houston Rockets to fifth place in the Western Conference. On December 29, 2006, he became the third youngest player in NBA history, having scored 14,000 points and 4,000 rebounds in his career. In the playoffs, the Houston Rockets lost again in the first round in seven games, this time against the Utah Jazz .

In the 2007/08 season , the Houston Rockets had to contend with numerous injuries. Yao Ming was not operational until February 2008. Despite these numerous injury problems, the Houston Rockets won 22 consecutive games at one point in the season. That year, the Rockets lost again to the Utah Jazz in the first round of the NBA playoffs, this time in six games. Despite several minor injuries, McGrady recorded 40 points and ten rebounds in the sixth game of this series.

In May 2008, McGrady had surgery on his left shoulder and knee. In February 2009, McGrady was operated on again on the left knee and missed the remainder of the 2008-09 season . Though the Houston Rockets were without McGrady, they beat the Portland Trail Blazers 4-2 in the first round of the NBA playoffs . In the second round, however, they had to admit defeat in seven games to the Los Angeles Lakers , who subsequently decided the NBA playoffs for themselves.

McGrady had only played six games in the Houston Rockets jersey due to his injuries in the 2009/10 season before he was traded to the New York Knicks on February 18, 2010 .

New York Knicks (2010)

Tracy McGrady was passed on from the Houston Rockets to the New York Knicks as part of a three-team trade. On February 20, 2010, he made his debut for the Knicks in the game against the Oklahoma City Thunder at Madison Square Garden in New York . He scored 26 points, five assists and four rebounds in 32 minutes, but the Knicks lost the game in extra time.

At the end of his career, McGrady was among other things active for the Knicks

Detroit Pistons (2010-2011)

On August 16, 2010, Tracy McGrady signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Pistons . On January 14, 2011, he achieved his personal season best of 22 points in a 101-95 win against the Toronto Raptors . He scored 8.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists for the Pistons in 72 games.

Atlanta Hawks (2011-2012)

After the lock-out ended in 2011, the Atlanta Hawks signed McGrady. He signed a one-year contract and was supposed to provide relief from the bank with the Hawks and replace Jamal Crawford . However, he could not build on his good performances in Atlanta and scored 5.3 points in 16 minutes per game.

Qingdao Eagles (2012-2013)

After the season, his contract was not renewed. After offers from other teams were not available, McGrady moved to China on October 9, 2012 for the Qingdao Eagles . There he again took on a more dominant sporting role in his team and became one of the top scorers in the league. After the end of the season he returned to the USA.

San Antonio Spurs (2013)

In April 2013 he was signed by the San Antonio Spurs shortly before the end of the season. There he should act as a replacement for Stephen Jackson, who had recently been dismissed, and provide points and relief for the starting five from the bank. He received the jersey with the number 1 at the Spurs. For the Spurs McGrady was used in 6 playoff games. He reached the NBA final with the Spurs, where they lost to the Miami Heat .

Resignation (2013)

On August 26, 2013, McGrady ended his NBA career. The then 34-year-old ended his NBA career with an average of 19.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game.
