Hidayet "Hedo" Türkoğlu (born March 19, 1979 in Bayrampaşa , Istanbul ) is a former Turkish basketball player with Bosnian ancestors . He is currently the chairman of the Turkish Basketball Federation (TBF).

Türkoğlu is considered the best Turkish basketball player in NBA history . In his 15-year NBA playing career, he played primarily as a small forward over 1,100 games from regular season and play-off games. In the beginning he also acted as a shooting guard , which is why he was also known as a so-called swingman . As he often the role of because of his ball skills and his overview build player took, he was also known as point forward referred. Later he was sometimes used as a power forward ( combo forward ). He had his most successful time at Orlando Magic, where Türkoğlu was voted Most Improved Player in the 2007/08 season , for which he was active in a total of eight seasons. With the Turkish national team , he also became vice European champion in 2001 and vice world champion in 2010.

For family and financial reasons, the minor Türkoğlu started working as a simit salesman in Eminönü at a young age . Because of his basketball talent and height, he won a scholarship at the Özel Çavuşoğlu Koleji ( German Private Çavuşoğlu- Gymnasium ) in Istanbul, where the young Türkoğlu played successfully and won the basketball school championships in Turkey and the high school basketball world championship in the middle and high school .

Efes Pilsen

The Turkish first division club Efes Pilsen Istanbul became aware of him through his athletic achievements in the Turkish basketball school sport . They signed the 16-year-old Türkoğlu in the 1995/96 season and so he later began his professional basketball career. In his second year at Efes Pilsen he was one of the most famous players on the team. As a result, the 18-year-old Türkoğlu signed a nine-year contract extension worth eight million US dollars with Efes Pilsen . In the 1999/2000 season he made a significant contribution with 22 appearances and his performances with 13.6 points and 4.6 rebounds on average per game in the FIBA European Cup , that Efes Pilsen was the first Turkish club to win the final four, Final mode, reached.

Türkoğlu played 87 Turkish league games and 50 European cup games for the Istanbul team in four years.

NBA

The 21-year-old Türkoğlu was established in June 2000 by the Californian Sacramento Kings on drafted 16th position , and the Sacramento Kings later paid a transfer fee of 1.5 million US dollars in Efes Pilsen to buy out him out of his current contract.

For his accomplishments in the first NBA year, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2001 . After his generally rather inconspicuous early years in the NBA with the Sacramento Kings and the San Antonio Spurs , “Hedo” reached his first career high point in the 2007/08 season : He became the NBA's Most Improved Player (player with the greatest increase in performance compared to the previous season ) after being named Player of the Month for April and twice Player of the Week (January 27th and February 3rd). Türkoğlu, who played his eighth NBA season, was in the starting line-up of his then-team Orlando Magic in all 82 games of the season and achieved career bests in points (19.5 per game - almost eight points more than his career average), rebounds (5, 7 per game) and assists (5.0 per game). He hit 40.0% of his throws beyond the three-point line and 82.9% of his free throws.

As in the previous season, Türkoğlu was also in the 2008/09 NBA season in all season games (both regular season and play-offs) with the Magic in the starting lineup. As one of the service providers next to Dwight Howard , he had a significant share in the move of Magic into the NBA Finals 2009 , in which they were finally defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers to Kobe Bryant with 1: 4.

Türkoğlu scored three triple- doubles for the Orlando Magic , a club record for the Magic. The first he scored with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 13 assists against the Dallas Mavericks . His second triple double he achieved with 23 points scored, 10 rebounds scored and 13 assists scored in a game against the Atlanta Hawks. Against the Golden State Warriors, Hedo made his third triple-double with 10 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists.

After missing the 2009 title, he moved to the Toronto Raptors in the summer of 2009 , where he struggled to find his place in the game system. After a disappointing season, he moved to the Phoenix Suns in July 2010 . On December 18, 2010, Türkoğlu was re- traded to the Orlando Magic . On April 3, 2011, he broke the 10,000 point mark in the game against the Toronto Raptors. This makes him the first Turkish player to have reached this mark.

In February 2013 he was banned from the league for 20 games for doping after testing positive for the anabolic steroid methenolone .

For the 2013/2014 season , head coach Jacque Vaughn stated that the Magic no longer plan with Türkoğlu and that he would no longer play games for the Magic. The reason he gave was that Türkoğlu no longer fit into the significantly younger team. In January 2014, the Magic released Türkoğlu from his contract according to the current rules of the NBA.

On January 16, 2014, he signed a contract with the Los Angeles Clippers until the end of the 2013-14 season, where he made his debut on January 18 against the Indiana Pacers with 4 points, 2 rebounds and an assist in 13 minutes.

On November 12, 2015, Türkoğlu declared his playing career over.

Hidayet Türkoğlu was one of the best clutch players in his first time with the Orlando Magic (2006-2009), is a basketball player who calls up outstanding sporting performances or decisions in crunchtime ( German  final phase ) in tight games for victory, the NBA and the Orlando Magic history. For which he was nicknamed "Mr. Fourth Quarter ”. With his clutch player skills he was primarily responsible for five game winners at the Orlando Magic and jointly responsible for others, so Türkoğlu is together with Penny Hardaway the game winner record holder in the Orlando Magic history. He also acted as a point forward .

Türkoğlu led the Turkish national basketball team to the final of the 2001 European Championship and, as captain, to the final of the 2010 World Cup in his own country.

In March 2014, 35-year-old Türkoğlu announced his resignation from the national team. With 269 internationals he played the most international matches of the Turkish national basketball team.
