Ronald Fred Seikaly ( Arabic رونالد فريد ﺼيقلي; Born May 10, 1965 in Beirut , Lebanon ) is a retired Lebanese - American basketball player . Seikaly played in the NBA for eleven years from 1988 to 1999 , winning the Most Improved Player Award in 1990 as the most improved player of the season. After his sports career, Seikaly devoted himself to music and now works as a DJ and music producer for house and techno music .

Career

Seikaly was born in Beirut, Lebanon. As a child he emigrated to Greece , where he spent his youth and attended an American school. In addition to basketball, he also played soccer. Panagiotis Koroneos discovered Seikaly and recruited him for the youth department of the Panathinaikos Athens , for which he played a tournament in 1984.

In the same year he moved to the United States to play basketball for Syracuse University . He has since been naturalized in the USA and took part in the 1986 World Basketball Championship . After four years he left Syracuse as the best rebounder, second best shot blocker and fourth best scorer in history. His jersey number 4 has not been awarded by Syracuse since then.

NBA

In the 1988 NBA Draft , Seikaly was drafted ninth by the newly formed Miami Heat . Already in his second year the young center player improved massively and scored 16.4 points, 10.4 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. For this increase in performance he was awarded the NBA Most Improved Player Award. At the side of Glen Rice and Steve Smith , the Heat reached the playoffs for the first time in 1992.

After another Playoffel participation in 1994, Seikaly left the Heat and moved to the Golden State Warriors . In the Heat, Seikaly still holds the record for the most rebounds in a game with 34 rebounds.

In the Warriors, however, Seikaly could not meet expectations due to injuries and was transferred to the Orlando Magic two years later . in the Magic he should replace Shaquille O'Neal, who had previously migrated . He also succeeded, he was the best scorer behind Penny Hardaway with 17.3 points per game. He also got 9.5 rebounds and blocked 1.6 shots per game. He reached the playoffs with the Magic, but failed because of the Miami Heat.

In the 1997–98 season, Seikaly was initially traded to the Utah Jazz , the then best team in the Western Conference . However, the transfer was not carried out due to a foot injury and Seikaly was transferred to the New Jersey Nets shortly afterwards .

Seikaly only played 18 games with the Nets before he had to end his career due to this foot injury. However, he returned to the basketball field in 2000 and played for FC Barcelona .

During his 12-year NBA career, Seikaly scored 14.7 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game.

Others

After the end of his career, Seikaly worked as a DJ and music producer and released the techno and house album Nervous Nitelife Presents Rony Seikaly in 2012 . He also runs a real estate company in Miami. Seikaly was married to the Mexican model Elsa Benítez .
