Glen Anthony Rice Sr. (born May 28, 1967 in Flint , Michigan , United States ) is a retired American basketball player of the Miami Heat , Charlotte Hornets , Los Angeles Lakers , New York Knicks , Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The 2.03 meter tall Rice was one of the best three-point shooters in the league during his playing days. As of 2016, he is in 19th position on the NBA leaderboard with 1,559 converted three-pointers. In the 1999/00 season he won the NBA championship with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Career

Rice played four years at the University of Michigan , where he won the NCAA championship with the Michigan Wolverines in his senior year of college and was named the best player of the tournament. He left the Wolverines with 2,442 points as the best scorer in team history.

In the subsequent NBA draft in 1989 , he was selected as the fourth player by the Miami Heat . After his first year as a professional, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team . Rice played for the Heat for six years, where he was a profitable scorer. However, the team was only moderately successful and reached the playoffs only twice in Rice's time in the heat.

In the summer of 1995, Rice was transferred to the Charlotte Hornets for Alonzo Mourning . Rice had his prime with the Hornets. He was elected to the All-Star Team three times in a row from 1996 to 1998 and became MVP of the All-Star Games in 1997. He set an all-star record with 20 points in a quarter. The season at the Hornets also went well. Rice was with 26.8 points per game, behind Michael Jordan and Karl Malone third-best basket hunter of the season, was elected to the All-NBA Second Team and the Hornets reached the playoffs.

After another season with the Hornets, he was transferred to the Los Angeles Lakers in the summer of 1999 for Eddie Jones and Elden Campbell . At the Laker he met Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant and took over the role of Jones as the starting small forward. He was no longer the primary attack option, but he still played an important role in winning the NBA championship in 2000. Still, in the eyes of many Lakers fans, Rice could not replace fan favorite Eddie Jones.

Despite 16 points on average in two years, he was transferred to the New York Knicks . There he came in sixth man with an average of 12.0 points. In the summer of 2001, he moved to the Houston Rockets , but completed only 20 season games due to an injury. After another year with the Rockets, he was transferred to the Utah Jazz in 2003 , but released shortly thereafter and signed by the Los Angeles Clippers . He completed 18 games for the Clippers before he suffered a serious knee injury and had to end his career after 15 years.
