NBA career

Los Angeles Lakers (1994–1999)

After attending college at Temple University , Jones was selected in the 1994 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Lakers in 10th place. He attracted attention early on when he was named Most Valuable Player of the Game ( MVP ) at the Rookie Challenge at the NBA All-Star Weekend . Jones scored 25 points, 4 rebounds and 6 steals .

He finished his rookie season with 14.0 points and 2.05 steals per game. He led the NBA in the steal / turnover ratio with 1.75. When the NBA Rookie of the Year Award was presented , Jones landed in fourth place behind the two winners Grant Hill and Jason Kidd , and runner-up Glenn Robinson . Jones was also named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team .

Jones developed into one of the best shooting guards in the league with the Lakers . In 1997 and 1998 he was appointed to the NBA All-Star Game . At the side of Shaquille O'Neal , Kobe Bryant and Nick Van Exel , the Lakers became serious contenders for the title again. Jones had a close friendship with Bryant. He had known Bryant since college at Temple , which was near Bryant's home in Philadelphia. So he supported and promoted Bryant's career.

In total, Jones played four and a half years for the Lakers. During his best season in 1997/98 he scored about 17 points, 4 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2 steals per game.

Charlotte Hornets (1999-2000)

During the 1999/2000 season , Jones was transferred to the Charlotte Hornets . In return, Glen Rice moved to Los Angeles. At the Hornets, Jones matured into a franchise player. During the 1999/2000 season he was called up again in the All-Star Game, he was also elected to the All-NBA Third Team , and for the third time in a row the NBA All-Defensive Second Team . Jones closed the season with 20.1 points per game.

Miami Heat (2000-2005)

After a year in Charlotte, Jones moved to his home club, the Miami Heat, in the form of a sign-and-trade deal . In return, Jamal Mashburn went to the Hornets.

The first few years at Alonzo Mourning's side went well for Jones, statistically. With 18 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists, he was one of the leading players in the Heat. The team success failed to materialize. The Heat decided to rely on young star Dwyane Wade in the future . In 2005 Jones was given to the Memphis Grizzlies .

Memphis Grizzlies, Miami Heat, Dallas Mavericks (2005–2008)

After a season in Memphis in which he was used in 75 games from the start, Jones lost his place on the starting line-up, so he returned to the Heat in 2007. Due to an injury to Wade, Jones played the remaining games in Miami on the starting line-up.

Jones spent his final year with the Dallas Mavericks before the Mavs handed him over to the Indiana Pacers in the middle of the season . Indiana fired him just days later, after which Jones announced his retirement from professional sports.
