Jamal Mashburn (born November 29, 1972 in New York City , New York ) is a retired American basketball player who was active in the NBA from 1993 to 2005 .
Career
High school and college
Jamal Mashburn visited in his youth, the Cardinal Hayes High School in his hometown of New York in the district of Bronx . He then studied at the University of Kentucky , where he played on the college team Wildcats . He became one of the key players on his team early on and was elected to the Consensus First Team All-American in his third year of college .
NBA
In the 1993 NBA draft , Mashburn was selected fourth by the Dallas Mavericks . At the beginning of his career he was one of the top performers of the team along with Jason Kidd and Jim Jackson . After his debut season, Mashburn was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1994 . In his second year as a professional, he averaged 24.1 points per game and was one of the league's most aspiring young stars. He was the youngest player to ever beat the 50-point mark in a game - this record has now been set by Brandon Jennings . Due to a serious injury, he completed only 18 games in the 1995/96 season . Despite his very good personal performance, the Mavericks were not even a play-off candidate at the time.
In February 1997 he was transferred to the Miami Heat in Tauchsch against Sasha Danilovic , Martin Muursepp and Kurt Thomas . Here he spent at the side of Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway three years before in August 2000 comprehensive in a nine-player trade with PJ Brown , Rodney Buford , Tim James and Otis Thorpe against Ricky Davis , Dale Ellis , Eddie Jones and Anthony Mason was traded to the Charlotte Hornets .
At the Hornets, Mashburn really flourished again and regularly scored over 20 points per game for the Hornets in the four seasons. In 2003 he was invited to the NBA All-Star Game because of his achievements . However, Mashburn seriously injured his knee and failed the entire 2004-05 season . At the end of his career in February 2005, Mashburn was transferred to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange with Rodney Rogers for Glenn Robinson . He retired shortly after the transfer, at the age of 32, due to chronic knee problems.
In his twelve-year NBA career, Mashburn achieved an average of 19.1 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game.

Others
After retiring from his career, Mashburn worked for the US radio station ESPN from 2006 to 2010 as an analyst for NBA games and was on the board of directors of the "Central Bank & Trust Company". As a businessman, he invests his money in many areas, including 38 “Outback Steakhouse” restaurants, 32 “Papa John's Pizza” restaurants, three “ Dunkin 'Donuts ” stores, Toyota and Lexus car dealerships , real estate and investments in Horse racing. He is also involved in social projects such as the “Mashburn Scholarship Fund” at the University of Kentucky , as well as “The MAP Foundation” and the “Mashburn Family Foundation”, of which he is a founding member and benefactor. He is a board member of the National Forest Foundation.
