Brandon Byron Jennings (born September 23, 1989 in Compton , California ) is a retired American basketball player who was active for most of his professional career in the NBA . Before he moved to the NBA in 2009, he caused a stir with his decision to play for the Italian professional club Lottomatica Roma after high school instead of playing in the college league NCAA as expected .

Career

High school and failure to move to the NCAA

After playing for the team at his home school, Dominguez High School in Compton, Jennings moved to Virginia two years before graduation to play for the team at the renowned Oak Hill Academy . After finishing high school in 2008, analysts considered him one of the greatest talents of his year. A regulation that came into force in 2006 did not allow him to register for the following NBA draft .

Jennings already had University of Arizona made its commitment to there college basketball to play, but scored the SAT is not enough points. When he took the test a second time, he achieved the required number of points, but the examiners found the jump in performance suspicious compared to the first test. Jennings then took the test a third time. However, he did not wait for the result, but decided to switch to Euroleague participant Lottomatica Roma . Sonny Vaccaro, agent on behalf of the sporting goods manufacturer Under Armor , which Jennings was supposed to use as an advertising medium when entering the European market, played an important role .

Intermediate year in Rome (2008-2009)

There Jennings, including the advertising contract with Under Armor, received an annual salary of about 1.2 million US dollars , while he should not have made any money in college. Moving to Europe in preparation for an NBA career instead of college was a once-in-a-lifetime step, which is why analysts expected his success to determine whether other high school graduates would follow suit.

Jennings, however, struggled with his role in Rome. His pace was barely seen, and due to his lack of experience, he was given significantly less playing time than would have been the case in college. In addition, his team did not play consistently, and Ferdinando Gentile, who was promoted to head coach after a third of the season (he replaced Jasmin Repeša ), hardly used Jennings in the last games of the regular season in Serie A. Jennings had to watch the play-offs completely, as there were only a limited number of foreigners in the squad and the club had just signed the Slovenian Jurica Golemac .

Milwaukee Bucks (2009-2013)

In the 2009 NBA Draft , Jennings was selected 10th by the Milwaukee Bucks . It quickly became apparent that, despite the difficulties, he had benefited from his time in Rome. In particular, he had to practice his jump shot after his hit rates for Lottomatica fell short of expectations. In his first NBA game, he was only one rebound and one assist away from a triple-double .

In his seventh game he scored 55 points, just three points less than the league record for rookies . However, he replaced LeBron James as the youngest player to score more than 50 points in an NBA game. In the further course of the season he could not quite build on this furious start, but surprisingly reached the playoffs with the Bucks and was elected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team . However, he missed this in the two following years. It wasn't until 2013 , when Jennings played alongside Monta Ellis , that the Bucks were back among the top eight teams in the Eastern Conference . In the first playoff round they were eliminated from the eventual NBA champions Miami Heat .

Detroit Pistons (2013-2016)

After his contract with the Bucks expired, Jennings was transferred to the Detroit Pistons in a sign and trade deal in 2013 in exchange for Brandon Knight , Khris Middleton and Vyacheslav Kravtsov . In January 2015 he tore his Achilles tendon , which is why he was out for the rest of the season. Just a few days earlier, he was the first NBA player in more than five years to succeed in a game with more than 20 points and assists.

Orlando Magic (2016)

On February 16, 2016, Jennings and Ersan Ilyasova were handed over to Orlando Magic for Tobias Harris .

New York Knicks, Washington Wizards, China and G-League (2016-2018)

Jennings signed with the New York Knicks on July 8, 2016 . He couldn't convince the Knicks and was released after six months. Shortly thereafter, the Washington Wizards signed him. Jennings was also unable to build on successful times at the Bucks and scored 3.5 points in 23 games with a weak 27% hit rate. In the summer he then joined the Chinese basketball club Shanxi Brave Dragons. In 13 games he scored 27.8 points and 6.8 assists per game before he was released. He then signed a contract in February 2018 with the Wisconsin Herd, a farm team of the Milwaukee Bucks in the lower-class G-League .

Milwaukee Bucks (2018)

The Bucks signed Jennings on a 10-day deal in March 2018. Jennings returned to the team where he started his career. In his first game for the Bucks, Jennings scored 16 points and 12 assists in a 121-103 win over the Memphis Grizzlies .
