Ferdinando "Nando" Gentile (born January 1, 1967 in Tuoro , Italy ) is a former Italian basketball player and current coach. His sons Alessandro and Stefano are also basketball professionals.

Player career

Club career

Gentile, who played in the position of point guard , began his professional career at Juventus Caserta , a club from Caserta . After a season at Pallacanestro Trieste, Gentile moved to the traditional Italian club Stefanel Milano in 1994, where he was under contract until 1998. Even if Gentile had won the Italian Club Cup twice in addition to two championships up to this point , the lost European Cup final was a heavy burden. He was in the final of the Korać Cup four times (1986, 1994, 1995, 1996) and one more time in the final for the European Cup Winners' Cup (1989) and the Saporta Cup (1998) without being able to leave the place as the winner . In 1998 Gentile moved to the top Greek club Panathinaikos Athens . With the Greeks he won three championships in a row and in 2000, alongside players like Fragiskos Alvertis , Dejan Bodiroga , Željko Rebrača , or Michael Koch , the most important success of his career was the European Cup . In 2001 he was again in a European Cup final ( Suproleague ), but lost there with Athens Maccabi Tel Aviv who could still be beaten in the previous year's final. In 2001 Gentile returned to Italy where he ended his playing career after one season each at Snaidero Udine and Mens Sana Siena in 2003.

National team

In the Italian national team , for which he scored 962 points in 132 international matches, Gentile was active from 1987 to 1996. During this period he took part in four European championships and in 1991 won the silver medal in front of a home crowd . In 1993 he won the gold medal at the Mediterranean Games.

successes

Coaching career

Gentile's first position as coach was Andrea Costa Imola, who he took over at the beginning of the 2006/2007 season and trained for two years. In 2008 he was assistant coach at the Italian ULEB Euroleague participant Lottomatica Roma , where he was promoted to head coach in December of the same year. He stayed there for a year before resigning in Serie A after just 3 wins from the first nine games of the 2009/10 season. In 2011 he took over the coaching position at the second division club Veroli Basket .
