Alessandro Gentile (born November 12, 1992 in Maddaloni , Campania ) is an Italian basketball player . He has been a national player in the Italian men's national team since 2011 . With record champion Olimpia Armani Milan, Gentile won the Italian championship in 2014, where he was named Most Valuable Player of the final series, and was selected in 53rd position by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2014 NBA Draft . However, Gentile will continue to play in Italy for the time being. His brother Stefano , who is three years older than him , has also been selected for the Italian men's selection; her father Ferdinando Gentile was one of the best-known Italian basketball players of his time in the 1990s as vice European champion in 1991 and national champion European cup winner in 2000 .

Career

In 2007 Gentile moved from the youth teams of the traditional Virtus from Bologna , whose men's team won the second most championship title in Italy behind Olimpia Milan, to Benetton from Treviso . When Gentile moved up into the men's squad in 2009, the best time of the formerly very successful club was also over and the team missed qualifying for the ULEB Euroleague 2009/10 . In the Eurocup 2009/10 , the only 17-year-old Gentile came to his first short appearances in European club competitions in the men's area, when Benetton was eliminated in the round of the best 16 teams. In the Italian championship, Benetton retired as the main round eight in the first play-off round for the title against the superior series champion Montepaschi Siena , who only lost two defeats to Italian teams during the season. In the following season, Gentile was already part of the permanent rotation of Benetton's players and in the Eurocup 2010/11 international played just under 20 minutes per game. In the quarter-finals of the Eurocup, they were able to defeat the German representative BG Göttingen and had only qualified for the Final Four tournament with a single defeat in the previous course of the competition , which was held in front of a home crowd in Treviso. Here, however, they lost both games and ended up in fourth place. Even before Gentile, his Lithuanian teammate Donatas Motiejūnas was awarded the "Rising Star Trophy" as the best young player in the competition. As the main round fifth of the Lega Basket Serie A , Benetton lost the play-off semi-final series again without a single win against defending champion Siena.

At the U20 European Junior Championships in 2011, the Italian junior selection lost the final against host Spain around Nikola Mirotić , who was voted the best player of the tournament and together with Gentile was part of the “all tournament team” of the five best players of the tournament. After Gentile had not yet made it into the final squad of the Italian men's selection for the 2011 European Championship finals , he played for the record champions Olimpia Armani from Milan in the 2011/12 season . With this team he just reached the intermediate round of the 16 best teams in the ULEB Euroleague 2011/12 , in which they were eliminated because of the poor direct comparison with UNICS Kazan , who had won the Eurocup in Treviso last year. In the Italian championship they reached the final series, which was lost after only one win in five games against defending champion Siena. In the following ULEB Euroleague 2012/13 , Milan failed after only three wins in ten preliminary round games after the preliminary round. In the Italian championship, too, the Milanese, in which the 20-year-old Gentile was already the third most important point collector with almost twelve points per game, only achieved fourth place after the main round, just ahead of defending champion Siena. In the first play-off round there was already a new edition of the previous year's final series, which Siena was able to win after victories in the sixth and seventh games.

At the European Championship final tournament in 2013 , Gentile was represented for the first time in a final squad of the Italian men's selection . After five preliminary round victories, Italy only won the final intermediate round match against defending champions Spain . After the following three defeats in the quarterfinals and placement games, however, the qualification for the 2014 World Cup was missed . In the ULEB Euroleague 2013/14 , Milan was able to qualify relatively confidently for the quarter-final play-offs, in which they had home rights against Maccabi Tel Aviv in the first game . But the Israeli team prevailed, so that Olimpia Armani missed the Final Four tournament in the home Mediolanum Forum , where Maccabi finally triumphed and won the most important European club title. In the final series of the Italian championship, Milan and defending champion Siena met again, which the record champions won this time with victories in the sixth and seventh games. Gentile was named Most Valuable Player of the play-off finals series. In the subsequent entry draft of the highest endowed professional league NBA , Gentile was selected in 53rd position by the Minnesota Timberwolves, but Gentile extended his contract in Milan until 2017.
