The location of the municipality in the province of Perugia

The municipality is located 309 meters above sea level on the north shore of Lake Trasimeno . Tuoro sul Trasimeno is located approx. 30 km northwest of the provincial and regional capital Perugia and in the climatic classification of Italian municipalities in Zone E, 2 104 GR / G. The churches of the parish belong to the Archdiocese of Perugia-Città della Pieve , with the exception of San Cristoforo a Piazzano.

The place consists of two parts: the actual town on the gently sloping hills and the Punta Navaccia holiday complex with a harbor and a beach on the lakeshore .

The districts include Borghetto (259 m, with Badiaccia partly belongs to Castiglione del Lago), Isola Maggiore (260 m), Piazzano and Vernazzano (Vernazzano basso, 275 m).

The neighboring municipalities are Castiglione del Lago , Cortona ( AR ), Lisciano Niccone , Magione and Passignano sul Trasimeno .

history

In 217 BC Near Sanguineto, Hannibal's troops and the Roman army fought the battle of Lake Trasimeno , which ended with a complete defeat of the Romans under Gaius Flaminius . An educational trail has been set up at the historic site. The stations of the battle are explained with panels. You can find the tombs of the thirty Carthaginian nobles buried by Hannibal as well as numerous cremation graves of Roman and African soldiers.

  • Campo del Sole , exhibition area on the lakeshore, in which 28 large sculptures by Italian and international artists from the years 1985 to 1989 are to commemorate the Hannibal battle.
  • Santa Maria Maddalena , church in the town center. Was rebuilt in the middle of the 19th century by Giovanni Santini.
  • Sant'Agata , church ruins on the hill just outside the village. Belonged to Farneta Abbey in 1238 and was active until the late 14th century.
  • San Martino , church in the Borghetto. First mentioned in 916, then in 1238 in a document by Gregory IX. documented. Today's appearance dates from the 14th century. The yoke contains frescoes from 1567.
  • Castello di Montegualandro , castle from the second half of the 13th century, about 2 km west of Tuoro sul Trasimeno.
  • San Cristoforo , church in the Piazzano district. Was first mentioned in 1583 and was a parish church until 1965. Is the only church in the municipality in the diocese of Arezzo-Cortona-Sansepolcro .
  • Santa Maria di Confine , church ruins in Pieve di Confine. First mentioned in 1037 as Plebs S. Marie sito Confinio as Pieve lying on the border ( Confine ) between Cortona and Perugia .
  • San Michele Arcangelo , Vernazzano Castle Church documented since the 14th century. A baptismal font has been documented since 1565 . The old church of the castle was abandoned in 1772, in the same year the new church of San Michele Arcangelo was consecrated.
  • Santa Maria delle Trosce (also Santa Maria dell'Ospedale ), church ruins near the former castle of Vernazzano. The 5.75 m × 7.52 m large church was mentioned in the 15th century and contains the frescoes Natività (created in 1514) and Madonna con Bambino .
  • Torre Pendente (English: leaning tower ), ruined tower of the former castle of Vernazzano, which was built in the 11th century.

  • The station Tuoro sul Trasimeno (until 1940 only Tuoro ) is located on the railway line Terontola - Foligno . The Borghetto di Tuoro train station is in the Borghetto district in the western part of the municipality and is on the same railway line, but is rarely used.
