history
The area was settled as early as the Etruscan era. At first the small town was called Carpina , in the Middle Ages the settlements in the area were called Pian di Carpine . The place grew with the arrival of the Sovereign Order of Malta (Cavalieri Gerosolimitani) in the first half of the 12th century, who opened the Badia (now known as Castello dei Cavalieri di Malta) as Ospedale. In 1292 the place had about 900 inhabitants. In the middle of the 13th century there were conflicts between the population and the order, which led to the establishment of the town of Montecolognola, accompanied by a decline in population and the change of the marketplace in 1383 in front of the main gate of Montecolognola. At the same time, the town consolidated itself through the Badia and its proximity to the road from Perugia to Cortona , so that as early as the 14th century, osterias and accommodations were again documented in Magione.
