Agello is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of the Italian municipality Magione in the province of Perugia .

geography

The place is about 9 km south of Magione and about 13 km southwest of the provincial and regional capital Perugia . Located on a hill 411  meters high , it overlooks the Capanne plain on one side , crossed by State Road 220, and on the other it overlooks Lake Trasimeno .

history

The name of the place is derived from the nymph Agilla , who, according to mythology , is said to have fallen in love with Trasimeno , the son of the god Thyrrenius . In Roman times the existence of a castrum is occasionally attested in the battle against Hannibal (219 BC) .

The castle ruins
  • Fort (12th century), today's castle ruins. The castle was destroyed in 1503 by the troops of Cesare Borgia .
  • San Michele Arcangelo , parish church (mentioned in 1618) near the castle.
  • San Rocco e San Sebastiano (also Cappella dei Caduti ), church on the fortification wall. Contains the Chapel of the Fallen (Cappella dei Caduti), a memorial to the fallen of the two world wars, created in 1926 and expanded after World War II. The church was built around the 15th and 16th centuries. Century and contains the fresco Crocifissione (16th century). The wooden statues of San Sebastiano and San Rocco date from the 17th century.
  • San Donato , church below the castle ruins, which was first mentioned on February 8, 1115.
  • Madonna del Rosario , church just north-west of the village (15th century).
  • Santa Maria Goretti , church in the Località Valle Lupina (Vallupina), built in 1950.
  • San Giuseppe , also called Chiesina de le Gracinesche , church near Vallupina.
  • Santa Rita , also called Madonna delle Vincaie , church in the Località Vignaia.
  • Madonna del Giglio , church about 2 km south of Agello on the Pievaiola road . First owned by the Marchesi di Sorbello and then by the Angelini Rota family .

economy

In the 1960s, the number of inhabitants shrank, a development that has recently been reversed, partly due to tourism.
