Vallo di Nera is an Italian municipality with 357 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Perugia in the Umbria region and is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).

The community extends over around 36  km² . It is located about 200 km southeast of Florence and about 60 km southeast of Perugia . The place is in the Valnerina valley and on the river Nera .

The districts include Geppa ( 559  m slm ), Meggiano ( 769  m slm ), Montefiorello ( 725  m slm ), Paterno ( 605  m slm ), Piedilacosta ( 872  m slm ) and Piedipaterno ( 333  m slm ).

The neighboring municipalities are Campello sul Clitunno , Cerreto di Spoleto , Poggiodomo , Sant'Anatolia di Narco and Spoleto .

history

The first human settlements in the place go back to the year 800 BC. BC when the Naharci inhabited small settlements. The name Nahar , which gave its name to today's river Nera , also comes from this time . From 200 BC The Romans dominated the area. In 1177 the place came under the feudal rule of the Count of Spoleto, Corrado di Hursligen. Spoleto allowed Vallo to build a castle on September 8, 1217 and offered protection, but charged taxes for it. So the place came under the influence of Spoleto. The castle was taken by the Papal States in the same century . Between 1361 and 1490, Vallo was the most populous place in the Valnerina Valley, from this period most of the ecclesiastical and civil buildings and the first districts outside the city walls, such as the Borgo Santa Maria (14th century) or later Borgo Casali (15. Century). Around 1522-23, Vallo and other communities in the Valnerina valley took part in an uprising against Spoleto, which was bloodily suppressed. In 1860 the place was given the municipal statute and integrated into the Kingdom of Italy . In 1880 the previously autonomous communities Meggiano and Piedipaterno were renamed to Piedipaterno sul Nera and a year later assigned to the area of ​​Vallo. The district, three kilometers from Vallo, is now home to the municipal administration.

  • Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista , church Church in the town center from the 13th century, partly redesigned in the 16th century. Contains frescoes by Jacopo Siculo (including Transito della Madonna , also called Dormitio Virginis , 1536, as well as Incoronazione e Morte della Vergine , apse ).
  • Chiesa di Santa Maria , church built by the Franciscans in the 13th century . The church is mainly famous for the large number of frescoes in the interior, including works by Cola di Pietro ( Processione dei Bianchi , 1401) and Maestro di Eggi from the 14th and 15th centuries.
  • Chiesa di Santa Caterina , St. 14th century church dedicated to Catherine of Siena . Contains behind the altar the fresco Madonna con Bambino e Santa Caterina (15th century) and on the altar the canvas painting Sposalizio mistico di Santa Caterina con i Santi Pietro, Paolo, Giovanni Battista e Nicola da Tolentino (17th century).
  • Chiesa di San Rocco (also called Immagine del Trivio), church from the 15th century, which is located in Borgo Casali just outside the city walls. The portico was built in 1680, on the altar there are frescoes attributed to Maestro di Eggi.
  • Immagine delle Forche (also Madonna della Neve ), chapel from the 15th century outside the village on the dirt road to Castel San Felice. Contains frescoes by Jacopo Zabolino from 1494.
  • Chiesa di Santo Stefano , church in the district of Geppa. Includes the 17th century canvas painting Madonna del Rosario .
  • Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo , church in the center of Meggiano, 17th century.
  • Chiesa di Santa Maria Pedemonte , church at Meggiano's cemetery, 13th century.
  • Chiesa di San Giusto , church outside Paterno, 13th century.
  • Chiesa di San Sebastiano , church in Piedipaterno, 13th century.

Fior di Cacio ("Cheese Festival")

On a weekend in June, farms will present their products at a “cheese festival”. The main purpose of the Fior di Cacio event is to present the specialties of the Valnerina region to residents and tourists. The annual festival was launched by Mayor Agnese Benedetti in 2002.

Different varieties of sheep's cheese, fresh ricotta made from cow's milk, mild ricotta made from goat's milk and pecorino cheese are typical of this region. The focus of the early summer festival is also the life of the shepherds who make cheese in their own small businesses.
