history
The first settlements in the local area probably emerged at the time of the Romans , when the place emerged as a vicus . There are two theories about the origin of the name. The first came about through the work Naturalis historia by Pliny the Elder around 79 AD. In the third book he writes about the Gens Suilla and the Syllinates . The second theory comes from the 17th century and was created by the Italian historian Ludovico Jacobilli (born June 13, 1598 in Rome , † March 13, 1664 in Foligno ), who traces the place name back to the Roman general Lucio Cornelio Silla . Then Silla founded the place around 84 BC. In retreat after the battle of Spoleto. After the rule of the Lombards, the place was subordinate to the Counts of Spoleto, then to those of Norcia , and then, at the end of the 12th century, to the municipality of Alviano . In the 13th century, the town was under Spoleto and the back Papal States in the 14th century it was a fief of the family Colligola from what is now the district of Monte Santo. After the unification of Italy , the population increased from approx. 2550 to approx. 3220 in 1921. After that, the population fell to approx. 1200 inhabitants by 2001. In 1997 the place experienced a severe earthquake that severely damaged the historic center. The church of Santa Maria Assunta was badly damaged and the clock tower of the town hall was destroyed, but was later rebuilt.
