history

The first fortified medieval settlement dates back to 933 and was mentioned under the name "Albianum". The fortress was destroyed by Orvietos and Todi's troops. In the 15th century the place was fiefdom of the d'Alviano family. Its best-known member was the Condottiere Bartolomeo d'Alviano , who rebuilt the Castello in the Renaissance style and made the town the center of a small state. After the extinction of Alviano family the feud came to several owners and was 1654 by Olimpia Maidalchini , wife of Pamfilo Pamphili, one of the pope's brother Innocent X acquired.
