Montecastrilli is an Italian commune with 4936 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Terni in the Umbria region .

geography

The community extends over around 62 km². It is located about 50 km south of Perugia and about 15 km northwest of Terni .

The districts include Casteltodino, Farnetta , Collesecco, Castel dell'Aquila and Quadrelli.

The neighboring municipalities are Acquasparta , Amelia , Avigliano Umbro , Guardea , Narni , San Gemini and Terni .

history

According to legend, the place name comes from the Latin word Castra ( army camp ) and was created at the time when Hannibal moved to Rome in the second Punic War . After the fall of the Roman Empire , the Lombards first ruled the place , then the Byzantines , who expanded the place into a fortress to protect their routes to Ravenna and Rome. In the Middle Ages was the site of the Terre Arnolfe the Signoria degli Arnolfi (about today's province of Terni) to 1093, when the Papal States took control of Montecastrilli.
