Castel Viscardo is an Italian commune with 2825 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Terni in the Umbria region .

Location of the municipality in the province of Terni

The community extends over around 26 km². It is located about 60 km southwest of the regional capital Perugia and about 35 km northwest of the provincial capital Terni on the Paglia river and on the border with Lazio north of Lake Bolsena in the climatic classification of Italian communities in zone E, 2287 GR / G. It belongs to the Comunità montana Monte Peglia e Selva di Meana .

The districts include Le Prese, Monterubiaglio, Pianlungo and Viceno.

The neighboring municipalities are Acquapendente ( VT ), Allerona , Castel Giorgio and Orvieto .

history

In the 14th century the Castello di Madonna was built, the later town developed around this castle. The first rulers were the Monaldeschi from Orvieto, then the Spada took control of the place, and later the Counts of Montevecchio . The district of Monterubiaglio (approx. 340 meters above zero, approx. 350 inhabitants in 2001), which previously acted as an independent municipality, was incorporated into the municipality in 1879.
