Niccolò Tornioli (* after 1598 in Siena , † August 18, 1651 in Rome ) was an Italian painter.

biography

Calling St. Matthew , Rouen

He was born in Siena as the son of Lorenzo Tornioli, "weigher" at the city customs. In his hometown he was trained and began to paint. In 1635 he moved to Rome. There he befriended the collaborator of Agostino Tassi , Giovanni Antonio Galli , known as "lo Spadarino", and with the sculptors Francesco Mochi and Alessandro Algardi .

The trip to Rome with his protector, the later Cardinal (1670) Federico IV. Borromeo (1617–1673), did not bring him the customer contacts he had hoped for. Therefore, he left Borromeo in March 1636 and placed himself under the protection of Cardinal Moritz von Savoyen (1593-1657), who in the same year presented him with a portrait of Emperor Ferdinand III . and commissioned the pyrotechnic systems for the celebrations on the occasion of his accession to the throne. For the cardinal he also painted “many pictures with stories and miracles”, a Madonna in glory with the souls of the saints and a saint Michael who was sent to Turin .

In 1642 he switched to the service of Cardinal Francesco Barberini (1597–1679), for whom he painted a painting in the church of Santa Petronilla in Siena, which was destroyed by fire in 1689. He painted another Madonna and Child for Barberini , which was owned by Prince Maffeo Barberini in 1686. Another unknown work was done for Cardinal Francesco Adriano Ceva.

In 1643 he turned to the Congregation of the Chiesa Nuova (Santa Maria in Vallicella) and asked for a free painting in honor of Saint Philip Neri . He was entrusted with a fresco in the vault of a room behind the chapel of the saints, with an oval in the center with a Madonna who heals Saint Philip at the time of death , which remained unfinished when he died in 1651.

Among the Oratorians, he met Virgilio Spada (1596–1662), brother of Cardinal Bernardino Spada (1594–1661) and from 1645 head of the cathedral building works of St. Peter . In the same year, the cardinal bought seven paintings by Tornioli for his collection and later added three more, probably after the painter's death. 1645 bought Virgil himself two other paintings, including a Cain and Abel , the Pope Innocent X were given. Work followed for both sides of the Cappella Spada in San Paolo Maggiore in Bologna .

He was commissioned by Virgilio Spada to draw the cardboard boxes for the mosaics in the Cappella del Santissimo Sacramento in St. Peter's Basilica , which were made between 1647 and 1648. However, the order was discontinued in 1650 because he had painted the mosaic stones instead of using colored ones. His protector's outrage over the deception ended his career. The painter died the following year, leaving behind his wife Cecilia Castelli and daughter Francesca Maria.
