Agostino Tassi
Agostino Tassi , actually Agostino Buonamico (* around 1580 in Rome , † 1644 ibid) was an Italian painter .
Life
Tassi received his training in Florence , where he was influenced by the seascapes by Paul Bril . He is known for his extensive decoration of the Quirinal Palace and the Lancelotti Palace in Rome, where he simulated architectural backgrounds in an original way. He also painted in the Villa Doria Pamphili in Rome and worked as an engraver .
In 1612 he was accused of raping the painter Artemisia Gentileschi , who had been sent to study with him by her father Orazio, with whom he had painted frescoes for Pope Paul V. In the process he accused Artemisia of prostitution, which is why she was subjected to an embarrassing questioning. It is noteworthy that, despite the evidence, it was not the defendant but the victim who was tortured with thumbscrews during the trial. He was found guilty of rape and could choose between five months of forced labor and five months of exile - he chose the exile he never went into.
Around 1621 he took the young Claude Lorrain (1600–82) into his house as an apprentice.
