Richard of San Germano

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Richard von San Germano (* around 1165 ; † May 7, 1244 ) was a public notary in the city near the monastery of Montecassino . In addition to his official work in San Germano between 1186 and 1232, he has also been in the financial administration of Emperor Frederick II since 1220 . He has held a master's degree since 1214 . His presence at the IV Lateran Council is documented.

He is best known for his chronicle , which is handed down in two partly complementary editorships and reports on the history of the Kingdom of Sicily between 1208 and 1244. His representations always take the perspective of his home region. His reports are sober and repeatedly backed up with extensive quotations from documents and laws as well as letters. This makes his chronicle one of the most important sources for the history of Regnum under the reign of Frederick II. The text of the Assises of Capua and the Assize of Messina is only passed down through his chronicle.
