Villa Doria Pamphilj
Villa Doria Pamphilj (or Villa Doria Pamphili ) is the name of a large park on Via Aurelia Antica in Rome, west of the historic district of Trastevere , approx. 1.5 km south of the Vatican . It was laid out in the 17th century for the family of the same name and redesigned by Francesco Bettini at the end of the 18th century . It covers an area of approx. 1.8 km² and is one of the largest parks in Rome.
The villa includes the famous baroque country house Casino del bel respiro (or Casino Algardi ), which was built in 1644–1652 by Alessandro Algardi (1598–1654) and Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi (1606–1680) for Prince Camillo Pamphilj , a relative of Pope Innocent 'X. was built. The villa has belonged to the Italian state since 1957. With the surrounding baroque gardens, it is mainly used for representation purposes, in particular the reception of foreign heads of state and government by the Italian Prime Minister .
In 1849, during the Risorgimento , a battle took place there. Between 1859 and 1860 a triumphal arch was built on the site of the Casino dei Quattro Venti, which was destroyed during the fighting . The design comes from the architect Andrea Busiri Vici (1817–1911). In 1960 the Via Olimpica road was laid across the park . Most of the park has been freely accessible to the public since 1971.
According to Italian understanding, the term Villa Doria Pamphilj means the entire park including the building that is now owned by the Italian government . The latter is known in Italian as Casino dell'Algardi (after the architect from Bologna) or Casino del Bel Respiro . In German it can lead to misunderstandings because the term “villa” is normally used for a country house: In German, the building itself is often referred to as Villa Doria Pamphilj .
