history

The place was founded in the 12th century by the Polini family under the name Pulino . The Polini feudal lords gave the place their name, but a short time later they had to hand over rule over the community to the Arroni family. Pope Innocent IV placed Polino under the rule of Spoleto in 1248 . In 1333 Robert von Anjou occupied the place for the Papal States . In 1416 the rulers of Foligno (Nicolò VIII, Bartolomeo IV and Corrado XV Trinci ) bought the place, after their death Polino remained in the Trinci family until 1527, when the place fell back to Spoleto. Later in the same century, the Castelli family from Terni took over the government of the municipality and expanded the fortress. The Margrave Giambattista I Castelli built the Fontana di Polino , also called Fontana monumentale , which still exists today . Since the last heir of the Castelli, Francesco Maria Baldassini Castelli, left no descendants, the Albergotti family from Arezzo came to the Polino government around 1762. After the end of Napoleon's coalition wars, the Margrave Filippo Stefanoni Simonetti ruled, followed by Antonio Albergotti. After the Risorgimento , the place became part of the province of Terni.
