geography

Location of the municipality in the province of Terni

The community extends over around 28 km². It is located about 60 km south of Perugia and about 10 km northwest of Terni on the ancient Via Flaminia and the modern Strada Statale 3 Via Flaminia , where it has the San Gemini Nord and San Gemini Sud junctions . The place belongs to the Cittàslow , a movement founded in Italy in 1999 to slow down and improve the quality of life in cities and is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The most beautiful places in Italy). The place was entered in the Middle Ages through the city gates Porta San Giovanni (towards Perugia) and the Porta Burgi (towards Rome ). Due to the expansion of the city wall, the Porta Burgi is now centrally located in the local area and has been replaced in the south by the Porta Romana (1723), the northern city gate is now Porta Tuderte . The older city gates are connected by Via Casventino , the extension to Porta Romana is Via Roma. This part south of the Porta Burgi is called the new town.

The districts include Acquavogliera, Colle Pizzuto, Quadrelletto and Sangemini Fonte.

The neighboring municipalities are Montecastrilli , Narni and Terni .

history

Old town of San Gemini

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1036 in a document from the Abbazia di San Nicolò abbey . Since 1119 the place served as a royal estate for Narni. After that, the place was given as a fiefdom by Pope Clement VII to the Orsini with the help of the Papal States, but in 1530 they converted the fiefdom under Pope Urban VII into a county . In 1722 they sold the place to the Santacroce family for 13,500 scudi . 1781 received the community from Pope Pius VI. the city rights.

Carsulae

Area Archeologica of Carsulae

Carsulae is a former Roman settlement from the 3rd century BC. BC, which was created about 4 km north of San Gemini in the course of the construction of the Via Flaminia under the name Carsulis or Carsulae . A forum with several temples , an amphitheater , a theater , a Roman forum basilica , a church (Chiesa di San Damiano), the thermal baths and an archway with a cemetery in front have been preserved. The first archaeological excavations took place in the 16th century, but the most intensive only between 1951 and 1972. The ruins are well preserved as the city was not repopulated after an earthquake.
