Pierre Schneiter (born April 13, 1905 in Reims , Département Marne , † March 17, 1979 ) was a French politician of the Mouvement républicain populaire (MRP), who was president of the National Assembly for eleven months .

Life

After attending school, Schneiter studied at the École des hautes études commerciales (HEC) in Paris and graduated with a diploma . He then worked in the public service before becoming prefect after the liberation of France in August 1944 . At the same time he was a member of the Consultative Assembly of France liberated from Forces françaises libres and then from 1945 to 1946 of the Constituent National Assembly.

In 1946 he became a member of the National Assembly and was a member of it after his re-election from 1951 to 1957.

In addition, he became Undersecretary of State in the Foreign Ministry in 1946 . From November 1947 to July 1948, he was State Secretary for German and Austrian Affairs in the government of Prime Minister Robert Schuman .

Between July 1948 and August 1951 he was Minister of Public Health and Population in several governments of the Fourth Republic .

On January 11, 1955, he became President of the National Assembly and held this office for about eleven months until December 2, 1955. Schneiter was also Mayor of Reims from 1957 to 1959 .

He was also later President of the Horticultural Association of France and as such was awarded the Rheydt Golden Flower in 1969, the oldest German environmental protection prize.

His son Jean-Louis Schneiter was also a member of the National Assembly and mayor of Reims between 1999 and 2008.
