Ficulle is an Italian commune with 1622 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Terni in the Umbria region .

The municipality extends over an area of ​​about 65  km² , which results in a population density of about 27 inhabitants / km². Ficulle is about 50 kilometers southwest of Perugia and 60 kilometers northwest of Terni . It is part of the administrative community Comunità montana Monte Peglia e Selva di Meana and is located in the Chiana Valley .

The districts include Olevole and Sala.

history

The first human settlements in the place go back to the Etruscans , as finds from the Grotte della Madonna della Maestà show. Thereafter, the Romans dominated the area and set up observation posts on the roads leading north from Rome . At that time the place was known as Castrum Ficullensis . The name probably comes from the Latin word Figulus (pot), which is still featured in the town's coat of arms. The place was first mentioned in documents in 1292, when it was referred to as the outpost of Orvieto and the Filippeschi castle . After that the place fell into the direct sphere of influence of Orvieto, who expanded the fortress. In 1350, Angelo Monaldeschi della Vipera built the Castello della Sala in the Sala district, 5 km to the south . 1416 Ficulle with Orvieto was from Kirchenstaat ingested, which walls and ramparts goal for.
