history

The area was first settled in the Paleolithic . The only artifacts cannot be dated in any more detail. These are finds on Monte Peglia , namely two choppers and four flint artifacts, but no longer in a stratigraphic position. This means that they can only be roughly dated to the Middle Pleistocene .

Later there were early farmers in the region known as the Neolithic, later the Etruscans . then the Romans . The place was founded in the Byzantine era in the 8th century. In 1290 the place fell under the rule of Orvieto, which was represented by the Monaldeschi family . Later, San Venanzo passed to the Faina family , who built the Villa Faina , today's town hall , in the 16th century . In 1929 the place became an independent municipality in the newly established province of Terni. From 1861 to 1951 the place experienced a population increase from around 3400 inhabitants to around 5200 inhabitants, twenty years later the population had then almost halved.
