Antirhodos (also Antirrhodos ) was an island in the harbor basin of the east port of Alexandria , on which a Ptolemaic palace was located. It probably sank in the 4th century when there were several earthquakes and a tsunami after the earthquake off Crete in 365 in the eastern Mediterranean .

The name of the island Antirhodos ("against Rhodes") is said to go back to the rivalry with Rhodes . Together with parts of the Lochias peninsula in the east and the island of Pharos in the west, Antirhodes formed the royal port of ancient Alexandria. There may have been a small sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Isis on the island .

Rediscovery

In 1996, the island with the royal quarters in the port of Alexandria was rediscovered.
