The Vogelschutzwarte Neschwitz (also: Sächsische Vogelschutzwarte Neschwitz ) is an ornithological station sponsored by the State Operating Company for Environment and Agriculture (BfUL) in the municipality of Neschwitz in the Bautzen district in Saxony . Its seat is the former “gentlemen's pavilion” in the palace gardens of the baroque palace Neschwitz .

history

In 1930, the Saxon Heritage Protection Association founded a bird sanctuary in the New Palace in Neschwitz. The forester and ornithologist Arnold Freiherr von Vietinghoff-Riesch took over the management . As the owner of the castle and the associated park as well as the surrounding lands, he had favorable conditions for carrying out practical bird protection measures. Together with other bird protection centers, the Neschwitz bird protection center was named a state bird protection center in 1936. The New Palace was destroyed to the ground by arson at the end of the Second World War on May 20, 1945. Valuable documents from the bird sanctuary were destroyed and the facility was looted. Vietinghoff-Riesch and his family left Neschwitz because they were expropriated in the course of the land reform. From 1946, among other things, a bird protection station in Moritzburg temporarily took over bird protection in Saxony.

In 1953 the Saxon bird sanctuary in the old castle was reopened. Gerhard Creutz took over his management , who until then had dealt with all aspects of bird protection at the Research Institute for Horticulture in Pillnitz . At this time he was supported by numerous volunteers who worked at the bird sanctuary. At the end of 1969 the Neschwitz bird sanctuary was closed. The building was falling into disrepair.

In 1998 the sponsoring association “Saxon Bird Protection Center Neschwitz eV” was founded in order to re-establish the bird protection center. In April 1999 it began its work as the Saxon Bird Protection Center in Neschwitz. Joachim Ulbricht took over the management.

In 2011, the sponsorship was transferred from the association Sächsische Vogelschutzwarte Neschwitz eV to the State Operating Society for Environment and Agriculture (BfUL). The previous sponsoring association made up of representatives from the Bautzen district, the Neschwitz community, the Saxon Heritage Protection Association e. V., the Association of Saxon Ornithologists e. V., the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU) - Landesverband Sachsen e. V. as well as several individuals was converted into a development association .
