Monteleone di Spoleto is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 580 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Perugia in Umbria .
geography
The municipality is located about 69 kilometers southeast of the provincial and regional capital Perugia am Corno and borders directly on the provinces of Rieti ( Lazio ) and Terni . It lies in the climatic classification of Italian municipalities in Zone E, 2 914 GR / G.
The districts include Rescia (961 m, approx. 20 inhabitants), Ruscio (786 m, approx. 125 inhabitants) and Trivio (926 m, approx. 80 inhabitants).
The neighboring communities are Cascia , Ferentillo ( TR ), Leonessa ( RI ), Poggiodomo , Sant'Anatolia di Narco and Scheggino .
history
According to legend, founded by Achilles , the first settlement here should have existed from the 6th century BC at the latest. Traces of Roman settlement have been preserved in the Trivio district . Around 880 a castle was built by a Brufa , but it was destroyed again in 1100. The Republica Monte Leonis, proclaimed in 1535, had a short existence . Monteleone is known as the site of an Etruscan chariot that dates back to around 530 BC. Is dated. The car was found in 1903 and is now in the holdings of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. There is a copy in Monteleone.

The former Strada Statale 471 di Leonessa (now a provincial road) runs through the municipality from Cascia to Montereale .
