Passignano sul Trasimeno is an Italian commune ( comune ) with 5679 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Perugia in Umbria .

geography

The place is 29 kilometers west of the provincial and regional capital Perugia and 289 meters above sea level on the northern shore of Lake Trasimeno . It is in the climatic classification of Italian municipalities in zone D, 2 084 GR / G.

The districts include Castel Rigone (653 m), Col Piccione , Oliveto , Pischiello , San Donato , San Vito (307 m), Trecine and Le Pierle . In addition, the island of Isola Minore (258 to 284 m) belongs to the municipality.

The neighboring communities are Castiglione del Lago , Lisciano Niccone , Magione , Tuoro sul Trasimeno and Umbertide .

history

The place was already inhabited by Etruscans and Romans in pre-Christian times . The remains of the fortress “La Rocca”, which dates back to structures from the 5th or 6th century, stand on a rock above the town. Only two gates of the city wall and three towers remain of the medieval city, the rest of the place developed in the 15th and 16th centuries. The churches Chiesa di San Rocco and Santuario della Madonna dell'Oliveto date from this period ; the last one was supposedly planned by Mariotto Radi from Cortona.

  • San Bernardino , church in the center, which consists of two parts. The upper part was built in the 14th century, the lower (Oratorio del Santissimo Sacramento) in 1573. From 1578 to 1937 the church was the parish church of the village.
  • San Cristoforo (Chiesa di San Cristoforo), church in the center, built in 1937 by the architect Giuseppe Agamennone.
  • San Rocco , church in the center from the 16th century.
  • San Cristoforo ( Pieve di San Cristoforo), church outside the town center. First mentioned in 1136 in a document from Pope Innocent II as Santa Maria. Probably consecrated to San Cristoforo in 1432. Contains two cycles of frescoes, one by Policleto da Cola and created in 1418, the other by an unknown artist in the first half of the 16th century.
  • Madonna dell'Oliveto , Santuario outside the town center, which was built between 1582 and 1586.

The Palio delle Barche ( Palio of the Boats) in July and the Festa della Padella (Pan Festival) in September attract guests from far away.

economy

The former fishing village is now a main attraction for tourists on Lake Trasimeno and home port of the sea fleet for the connection between the islands of Isola Maggiore and Isola Polvese and the tourist centers on the shores of the lake.

The aircraft manufacturer SAI Ambrosini was based in Passignano sul Trasimeno until 1992 . The unused factory halls are still standing at the entrance to the town.

The Italian automobile company Paolo Coloni Racing , which competed in Formula 1 as Coloni Motorsport between 1987 and 1991 , has been based in the industrial area of ​​Passignano sul Trasimeno since the early 1980s .
