The 1987 Formula 1 World Championship was the 38th season of the Formula 1 World Championship . It was held over 16 races from April 12, 1987 to November 15, 1987. Nelson Piquet won the Drivers' Championship for the third time. Williams was the fourth time constructor world champion.
Changes in 1987
Regulations
After only turbo engines were permitted in 1986, the FIA surprised the designers on October 3, 1986 with a short-term change in the rules: Beginning with the 1987 season, in addition to the turbos, it again allowed conventional naturally aspirated engines in Formula 1 , with a displacement limit of 3.5 liters has been. With this rule change, the FIA intended to cut costs and hoped to make Formula 1 economically attractive for new teams. As a further incentive, the FIA announced its own ratings for the naturally aspirated teams and drivers with the Colin Chapman Trophy and the Jim Clark Trophy .
In order to further encourage the competition, a restriction of the boost pressure to 4 bar was introduced for turbo engines , which should be enforced with the help of distinctive "pop off" valves. In addition, the amount of petrol for vehicles with turbo engines was limited to 195 l, whereas the amount for vehicles with naturally aspirated engines remained unlimited. In addition, the minimum weight of the vehicles has been increased to 500 kg.
Racetracks
The 1987 Canadian Grand Prix was not held because the local promoter was involved in a dispute with the sponsors. The year was used for renovation work on the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve . Instead, the Japanese Grand Prix returned to the racing calendar after a ten-year absence and was held for the first time on the Suzuka International Racing Course .
In addition, the Grand Prix of Great Britain last moved from Brands Hatch to the Silverstone Circuit , where this race has been taking place ever since. In addition, the Spanish Grand Prix has been moved from autumn to spring, as has the Belgian Grand Prix before the Monaco Grand Prix .
Teams
The new teams March , Larrousse and Coloni entered the Formula 1 stage with the prospect of using inexpensive naturally aspirated engines . In 1987 , however, Team Haas did not compete again. In addition, the Middlebridge-Trussardi team's attempt to enter racing with an old Benetton chassis during the season failed .
Engines
The only engine manufacturer that was able to react to the rule change at short notice was Cosworth . From the DFV eight-cylinder constructed in 1966, a 3.5-liter variant was developed within three months, which was named DFZ . It was the only naturally aspirated engine that was used that season. Tyrrell and AGS used this engine, as did the new competitors March, Larrousse and Coloni, so that a total of five teams competed for the Colin Chapman Trophy.
BMW and Renault stopped delivering customer engines after the 1986 season, forcing several teams to look for new engine partners. The only exception was Brabham , the previous BMW factory partner, who, however, had to use a design of the M12 engine that was tilted to its side by 75 ° , which had been made in the previous year exclusively for the sensational but technically disappointing BT55 . The remainder of the M12 motors, on the other hand, was acquired by Jackie Oliver's company Megatron and initially given exclusively to Oliver's racing team Arrows . Benetton, another BMW customer, on the other hand, became a works partner of Ford and exclusively used the GBA turbo engine , which had been reserved for the Haas team in the previous year.
From the former Renault customers, Tyrrell returned to Cosworth naturally aspirated engines, as mentioned. Lotus in turn now had access to Honda engines. For the Équipe Ligier , however, the search for an engine partner turned into an ordeal: Alfa Romeo's acceptance was surprisingly withdrawn almost two weeks before the start of the season after disappointing test drives. Only with political help from the French Ministry of Sports was Ligier finally also able to acquire Megatron engines.
tires
The Italian tire manufacturer Pirelli withdrew from Formula 1 after the 1986 season. All Goodyear teams have now been equipped accordingly .
Technical innovation
Lotus used an active wheel suspension for the first time in the 99T , in which the driving behavior was evaluated under computer control and the suspension was to be hydraulically adapted to the relevant situation. Corresponding systems were expensive and complex and were therefore only available to financially strong teams in the next few years, but were decisive for success in the early 1990s at the latest, until they were completely banned in the 1994 season along with other driving aids.
driver
McLaren brought the Swede Stefan Johansson from Ferrari into the team for Keke Rosberg , who had ended his Formula 1 career at the end of the 1986 season . Ferrari signed the Austrian shooting star Gerhard Berger from Benetton, who last year was only able to win a race for the then new racing team in his second full season. Berger's place at Benetton was taken by Thierry Boutsen , who came from Arrows.
With its driver choice, Lotus reacted to the wishes of supporters of the team and, in accordance with the will of the engine supplier Honda, brought the Japanese debutants Satoru Nakajima into the cockpit, after Johnny Dumfries had already been asked by the main sponsor in the preseason , alongside No. 1 driver Ayrton Senna was started. Furthermore joined Ivan Capelli , who had driven the only two races of the then new AGS teams in the previous year to March, where he was to stay until the 1,991th
The controversial but experienced Andrea de Cesaris moved from Minardi to Brabham. Former Brabham driver Derek Warwick switched to Arrows, as did Eddie Cheever , who had not been given a regular seat the previous year and had only driven one outing for Team Haas. Christian Danner , the other Arrows driver alongside Boutsen in 1986, switched to the German Zakspeed team, which, like Arrows, was completely reorganized. In addition to Danner, Martin Brundle came to the team, who in exchange gave Jonathan Palmer to Tyrrell and in turn sacked the Dutchman Huub Rothengatter .
With the departure of Team Haas, the Formula 1 careers of Alan Jones and Patrick Tambay also ended .

Colin Chapman Trophy
For the naturally aspirated engine teams, the FIA also carried out its own constructors' championship in 1987, which was known as the Colin Chapman Trophy. Only the naturally aspirated vehicles were rated. The points awarded corresponded to the system of the constructors' world championship. The Colin Chapman Trophy went to Tyrrell.
