Reports
background
For the first time since 1977 a Japanese Grand Prix was held again. The race took place for the first time on the Suzuka International Racing Course .
Before the penultimate World Cup round of the season, only the two Williams drivers Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell had a chance of winning the World Cup, with the Brazilian twelve points ahead of the British.
At AGS , Pascal Fabre was replaced by Roberto Moreno , who was registered for a Grand Prix again around five years after failing to qualify for the Dutch Grand Prix in 1982 .
training
Mansell had a serious accident during training on Friday. Due to the injuries he suffered, it was decided after a night in hospital to refuse him participation in the race. He then flew back to Europe on Saturday. Nelson Piquet was thus established as Formula 1 world champion for the third time.
Gerhard Berger qualified for pole position in front of Alain Prost and Thierry Boutsen and his Ferrari teammate Michele Alboreto . Nelson Piquet and Teo Fabi formed the third row ahead of Ayrton Senna and Riccardo Patrese .
run
Gerhard Berger achieved a start-to-finish victory. Boutsen, who had initially occupied second place, fell behind Senna and Piquet on the twelfth lap and behind Stefan Johansson on the following lap .
After Piquet retired due to an engine failure five laps before the end, Michele Alboreto finished fourth behind Berger, Senna and Johansson, as well as Thierry Boutsen and Satoru Nakajima .
