The 1988 Japanese Grand Prix took place in Suzuka on October 30th and was the 15th race of the 1988 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

Since Yannick Dalmas was not available due to illness, the Larrousse team offered the reigning champion of the Japanese Formula 3000, Aguri Suzuki , the opportunity to make his Formula 1 debut on the occasion of his home Grand Prix.

training

After qualifying with Ayrton Senna in front of Alain Prost and Gerhard Berger, the order of the first three starting positions corresponded to the usual picture of the 1988 season. Ivan Capelli followed in fourth place in front of the two Lotus drivers Nelson Piquet and Satoru Nakajima .

run

At the start, Ayrton Senna's engine failed, so that a large part of the field, led by Alain Prost, passed him. On the slightly sloping start-finish straight, Senna managed to get his engine rolling again so that he could start the race in 14th place. After four laps he was back in fourth place. On lap 20 he reached second place behind his team mate, who had been briefly ousted from the lead by Capelli, but had successfully countered.

On lap 28, Senna took the lead and defended it to the finish. He thus secured his first world title, although Prost, who was struggling with a transmission problem, finished second. The points system that was valid at the time, which provided for the results to be deleted according to a certain scheme, prevented Prost from becoming world champion despite better consistency and a higher absolute score.

Thierry Boutsen crossed the finish line in third in front of Gerhard Berger, Alessandro Nannini and Riccardo Patrese . To the delight of the local audience, her compatriot Satoru Nakajima came in seventh.
