Mohn Media (until 1999 Mohndruck ) is a German company of the printing industry with headquarters in Gütersloh . It was created in 1946 when book production was separated from Carl Bertelsmann's book publisher . Mohn Media is the market leader in offset printing and part of the Bertelsmann Printing Group , Europe's largest printing group.

history

In 1835 Carl Bertelsmann founded C. Bertelsmann Verlag in Gütersloh . From the very beginning, the company also included printing houses. After the Second World War , on the recommendation of the military government at Bertelsmann, the publishing area was separated from technical production, which, among other things, should facilitate reconstruction. 1966 was a general partnership under the firm "Mohn & Co." in "Mohndruck Reinhard Mohn" renamed. The company opened up more to external clients and also invested in modern printing technologies. Mohndruck laid the foundation stone for the Bertelsmann Group's printing and industrial businesses.

After the Bertelsmann group was converted into a stock corporation , Mohndruck was also converted into a corporation , a GmbH . In 1979 the company "Mohndruck Graphische Betriebe" was entered in the commercial register . In 1980, Mohndruck and other Bertelsmann companies at the Gütersloh location received greater attention when Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt visited them . In the further course of the 1980s, the introduction of electronic data processing in particular caused major changes in the printing works. Mohndruck put the largest book production line in Europe into operation and began extensive renovations in 1990 to expand its production and distribution areas. A newly built block-type thermal power station took over the power supply, and efforts were made to use more chlorine-free paper. During this time, Mohndruck introduced numerous measures to protect the environment.

In the 1990s, Mohndruck was one of the leading offset printing companies in Europe and, based on the number of employees, the largest printing company in the Bertelsmann Group. After German reunification , the company also bought the large graphic company Pößneck, which is now GGP Media . This initiated the expansion into Eastern Europe and Russia. In 1993, Mohndruck implemented an integrated digital prepress for the first time. Regardless of these investments, Mohndruck fell into the red in 1995. The company felt the competition especially in the area of reproduction. In order to reduce costs, cuts in the workforce were necessary, which, however, led to criticism from the employee representatives.

In 1997, the company entered into a cooperation with the largest Japanese printing group , Dai Nippon Printing , in order to be able to supply customers there. In the same year, the dispute with the works councils was settled by a company alliance for work , which, among other things, provided for the waiver of redundancies for several years. As Mohndruck was changing more and more from a classic printing company to a service company, the company changed its name to Mohn Media in 1999. This should make it clear that it covers a broad value chain . At the turn of the year 2004/2005, Mohn Media bought its competitor Vogel Druck from Würzburg . The Gütersloh company initially acquired 49% of the shares. The transaction took place against the background of the takeover of Motor Presse Stuttgart by Gruner + Jahr . The aim of the cooperation between Mohn Media and Vogel Druck was to expand the range, especially for existing customers.

Mohn Media achieved this goal, among other things, through several lithomaniacs ordered from Manroland. In 2009 the company expanded its activities for the first time to the printing of brochures, for which it received large orders from the retail chains Netto and Real . Because Mohn Media was able to compensate for falling magazines, the business remained stable compared to other printing companies in the late 2000s and beyond. In the following years, the company increased its capacity for brochures several times. In addition, the company received several important large orders such as for the printing of the “ Asterix ” magazine and the “ Playboy ” magazine. The printing of a partial edition of “ Spiegel ” since the beginning of 2015 became a prestige project for the print shop because the news magazine switched from gravure to offset printing.

In recent years, Mohn Media has primarily invested in printing and post-production . In 2016 the company announced that it would set up a third large-scale press. The existing machines were already able to produce several million pages per hour. On January 1, 2016, Mohn Media became part of the newly created Bertelsmann Printing Group . The group of companies includes offset and gravure printing companies as well as some service companies in the field of marketing.

On August 11, 2020, Mohn Media announced that it would cut 470 of the almost 2,000 jobs in the next few years. The head office in Gütersloh and the Probind bookbindery in Marienfeld are affected .

Services

Mohn Media prints books , catalogs , brochures , telephone books and magazines as well as other advertising materials for which speed and effective customer approach are important. The services include conception, design, printing and processing. The company opens up entire "media worlds", which also includes, for example, tailor-made database solutions. Traditionally, a special focus is the preparation of images and texts for the production of printing forms for the various printing processes. As early as 2002, Mohn Media bundled its expertise in the field of reproduction technology at 4MAT Media in Hamburg .
