GGP Media (formerly Karl-Marx-Werk Pößneck , 1990-2000 Graphic United Pößneck ) is a German company of the printing industry with headquarters in Pößneck . It mainly produces printed books and e-books. The company is part of the Bertelsmann Printing Group , Europe's largest printing group.

history

The history of the company goes back to Vogel Verlag , which was founded in Pößneck in Thuringia in 1891 . After the Second World War , the company was nationalized, whereupon its owner Ludwig Vogel moved to Coburg in Bavaria. The book publisher went up in the Thuringian Volksverlag , the book production was named Karl-Marx-Werk Pößneck. This developed into the largest book factory in the GDR . After the fall of the Wall , the Treuhand turned the printing company into a corporation under the name of Graphischer Großbetrieb Pößneck. In October 1990, the international media group Bertelsmann acquired the company. The plant was then extensively modernized.

The company contributed a large part to the growth of Bertelsmann's printing and industrial division in the early 1990s. Nevertheless, the print shop did not reach the productivity level of West German companies. The turnaround was not achieved until the mid-1990s through a restructuring program . In addition, the company concentrated on the production of monochrome books from then on. It advanced to become the German market leader in this area. In the further course, Bertelsmann converted the large graphic company Pößneck and other companies in the printing and industrial sectors into a global media service provider. The print shop became part of the division that was named Arvato in 1999 . With the renaming from Mohndruck to Mohn Media , the name GGP Media was also introduced for the Thuringian plant.

In the first ten years after the takeover by Bertelsmann, GGP Media's sales rose to 200 million marks . After the turn of the millennium, the group continued to invest heavily in the Pößneck location, for example in the form of modern printing machines or a new hall for the bookbindery . GGP Media became one of the most important companies in the region and the market leader for monochrome books in Europe. In 2010 the portfolio was expanded to include the production of e-books and typesetting services. Regardless of this, the entire printing industry came under increasing pressure in the 2010s. The reasons for this were, among other things, overcapacities and falling circulation. GGP Media countered this development with investments in digital printing and the automation of work processes. Bertelsmann supported the strategy by founding the Bertelsmann Printing Group on January 1, 2016. GGP Media is one of a total of 13 largely independent business units in the group.

Services

GGP Media's target group is primarily book publishers . While Mohn Media has traditionally specialized in colored works, the so-called “black and white book” has been located in Pößneck since Elsnerdruck's production was relocated in 2002. In addition to prepress, production in printed and digital form, further processing and finishing, GGP Media takes on the logistics and delivery of books, for example. The most famous works of the printer include titles from the series " Harry Potter " and " 50 Shades of Gray ". GGP Media also printed “ Der Schwarm ” by Frank Schätzing, the first FSC -certified book for the German market.
