The 1988 Belgian Grand Prix took place on August 28th at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps near Spa and was the eleventh race of the 1988 Formula 1 World Championship .

background
A few days after Enzo Ferrari's death , Formula 1 competed in Belgium for the eleventh World Championship round of the year. Nigel Mansell was absent due to illness and was represented by Martin Brundle .
training
Once again the McLaren drivers Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost were the fastest in practice and formed the front row in front of the two Ferrari drivers Gerhard Berger and Michele Alboreto . Riccardo Patrese followed in fifth place in front of the two Benetton team- mates Thierry Boutsen and Alessandro Nannini .
Due to less favorable weather conditions on Saturday, none of the participants in the second qualification training could undercut the best time set on Friday.

Senna and Prost had agreed in the run-up to the race that whoever would be first to reach the tight La Source hairpin after the start would not have to fear any resistance from their team mate in order to avoid a collision. Accordingly, Senna gave way to the better started Prost there. On the long straight behind the Eau Rouge curve, however, the Brazilian overtook out of the slipstream and defended the top position from then on to the finish. Prost came in second.
Due to technical problems, Berger was eliminated after a few laps. On lap 36, his team-mate Alboreto also had to retire due to an engine failure. Boutsen was third ahead of Nannini. Ivan Capelli crossed the finish line in fifth ahead of Nelson Piquet .
After the race, illegal fuel was found in the tanks of the two Benettons. Both drivers were disqualified. The two Arrows pilots Derek Warwick and Eddie Cheever therefore moved up into the points.
