The 1988 Monaco Grand Prix took place on May 15 and was the third race of the 1988 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

In terms of the field of participants, there was no change compared to the San Marino Grand Prix two weeks earlier.

training

Stefano Modena was banned from the race weekend before the start of the first practice session because he did not follow a request to weigh in.

Ayrton Senna beat his McLaren team- mate Alain Prost again in qualifying , this time by around 1.4 seconds. With a lap time that was around 1.2 seconds slower, Gerhard Berger followed ahead of his Ferrari team- mate Michele Alboreto . Nigel Mansell and Alessandro Nannini formed the third row ahead of Derek Warwick and Riccardo Patrese .

The two Lotus pilots had bad training results. While the reigning world champion Nelson Piquet qualified in eleventh, Satoru Nakajima failed to qualify.

run

While Senna was able to defend his top position after the start, Prost lost his second place due to a switching error to Berger. Only in the 54th lap did Prost manage to overtake Berger again. Senna meanwhile had a lead of around 50 seconds.

On the 67th lap, Senna had an accident due to a driving error in the porter curve. He did not return to the pit of his team, but immediately disappeared into his apartment, which he owned in Monaco.

Alain Prost won ahead of Gerhard Berger and Michele Alboreto. Derek Warwick was fourth ahead of Jonathan Palmer and Riccardo Patrese.
