background
After the European Grand Prix , Michael Schumacher led the drivers' standings with 18 points ahead of Mika Häkkinen and with 22 points ahead of David Coulthard . Ferrari led the constructors' championship with 10 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 47 points ahead of Williams-BMW .
With Michael Schumacher (four times) and Häkkinen (once) two former winners competed for this Grand Prix.
training
In the first free practice session, which traditionally took place in Monaco on Thursday, Coulthard achieved the fastest lap ahead of Michael Schumacher and Giancarlo Fisichella . In the free practice on Saturday the order at the top remained unchanged: Coulthard was leading ahead of Michael Schumacher and Fisichella.
Qualifying
In qualifying, Michael Schumacher posted the fastest lap and took pole position . Jarno Trulli was second ahead of Coulthard.
Warm up
In the warm-up, the Ferrari drivers took a double lead: Rubens Barrichello posted the fastest lap ahead of Michael Schumacher and his brother Ralf Schumacher .
run
The start had to be canceled twice. When the engine was broken off for the first time, Alexander Wurz's engine was responsible for the failure. The second crash resulted from a collision between Pedro de la Rosa and Jenson Button . De la Rosa was unable to take part in the third start due to the lack of a replacement car.
At the third start, Michael Schumacher again retained the lead in front of Trulli, who was put under pressure by Coulthard. Heinz-Harald Frentzen kept fourth place in front of Häkkinen, while Barrichello had to let Ralf Schumacher and Jean Alesi pass. Since the two Jordan drivers were unable to drive the same pace as they did in qualifying, there were gaps in the field. Michael Schumacher benefited from this and took off from the rest of the field. Since overtaking maneuvers were difficult to carry out on the narrow street course, the positions initially remained unchanged.
After Button and Marc Gené were eliminated with technical problems and Wurz and Gastón Mazzacane after accidents, Alesi had to retire in seventh place on lap 30 with a drive damage. Due to the failure of Alesi, Barrichello now had free travel and he drove in about the same times as Michael Schumacher at the top.
After Diniz was eliminated due to an accident, Häkkinen slowed down and pitted for a longer pit stop. The reason for this was part of the telemetry, which got stuck behind the accelerator pedal. One lap later, Trulli also slowed down and finally gave up with a differential damage, so that Coulthard, who was more than half a minute behind Michael Schumacher, was able to drive freely. Shortly afterwards there was another shift in the front seats because Ralf Schumacher drove his car into the wall. He suffered a cut on his leg, which had to be sewn with three stitches. At this point in time Michael Schumacher, Coulthard, Frentzen, Barrichello, Fisichella and Eddie Irvine were in the first six places.
A little later there were further failures. First Ricardo Zonta dropped out after an accident. On the 55th lap, Schumacher, who was 39 seconds ahead, slowed down and pitted. Due to an exhaust and suspension defect, the race was over for him in the lead. Coulthard thus took over the lead before Frentzen. Five laps later, Jos Verstappen also had an accident.
Barrichello put more and more pressure on Frentzen in the final stages of the race. Frentzen then lost control of his vehicle on lap 71 and retired. Coulthard finally won his second race of the season ahead of Barrichello and Fisichella. Irvine was fourth ahead of Mika Salo and Häkkinen. Häkkinen's attempts to drive past Salo failed. The McLaren driver also had to forego sixth and seventh gear at the end of the race.
With the win, Coulthard took second place in the drivers' world championship from his team-mate Häkkinen. Michael Schumacher continued to lead the world championship. With the designers, McLaren-Mercedes was able to halve the gap to Ferrari.
