Reports
background
After the Australian Grand Prix , Michael Schumacher led the drivers' standings with 4 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello and 6 points ahead of Ralf Schumacher . Ferrari led the constructors' championship with 12 points ahead of Williams-BMW and BAR-Honda .
With Michael Schumacher, Mika Häkkinen (twice each) and Jacques Villeneuve (once), three former winners competed for this Grand Prix.
training
In free practice on Friday, Häkkinen achieved the fastest lap ahead of Michael Schumacher and his team-mate David Coulthard . In the free practice on Saturday, Häkkinen kept the top position. Barrichello was second ahead of Coulthard. Prost's second driver, Nick Heidfeld, who drove on this route for the first time, started with the replacement car and had to change the engine after seven laps. Then he was able to do three more laps until the gearbox went on strike.
Qualifying
Alesi's engine was exchanged for qualifying and Heidfeld had to use the reserve car again due to clutch problems. In qualifying, Häkkinen once again managed to set the fastest lap and he took pole position in front of his team-mate Coulthard and Michael Schumacher. Qualifying was interrupted three times for a total of 17 minutes as various billboards fell over and posed a danger. The last board on the start-finish straight hit Jean Alesi's Prost car. Towards the end of the delayed session it started to rain lightly.
The Sauber pilots suffered several damage to the rear wing that day and finished in 20th and 22nd place at the end of qualifying. Since the team could not find the reasons for the technical problems in time, Pedro Diniz and Mika Salo decided to withdraw from the start.
Warm up
Another best time followed in the warm-up by Häkkinen, who had decided every weekend on the weekend for himself. Michael Schumacher and Coulthard followed in second and third place. During the session, Jean Alesi lost his rear wing during an outing.
run
At the start of the race, Häkkinen was able to defend his lead. Coulthard did not start optimally and lost second place to Michael Schumacher. Behind the three pilots were Barrichello, Eddie Irvine and Fisichella. The two Ferrari drivers put the McLaren drivers in front of them under pressure. Michael Schumacher passed Häkkinen in the Senna S and Barrichello also tried to make up a position in the corner. However, he only managed to drive past Coulthard during the further course of the lap. It quickly became apparent that the two Ferrari drivers had opted for a two-stop strategy. Michael Schumacher was able to continuously increase his lead over Häkkinen and Barrichello put the Finn under pressure.
After Alexander Wurz and Nick Heidfeld retired with engine damage and Jean Alesi with an electronic defect, Barrichello managed to take second place from Häkkinen. Also Jarno Trulli benefited from a two-stop strategy and outdated soon after fifth-placed Irvine. A little later Villeneuve had to give up with a gearbox damage. On the twentieth lap, Michael Schumacher finally completed his pit stop, before which he had a twenty second lead over Häkkinen. The German came back on the track in third place. After Irvine was eliminated with a spin, Barrichello also had to pit and handed the lead that he had in the meantime to Häkkinen, who now led the race ahead of Michael Schumacher, Coulthard and Barrichello. The gaps between the respective counterparties initially remained fairly constant.
Decisive incidents occurred a little later: Barrichello retired after 27 laps with a hydraulic defect. Three laps later, the leading Häkkinen pitted. It was too late for a two-stop strategy and too early for a one-stop strategy at the time. It quickly became apparent that the Finn had come to the pits because he could no longer drive with a loss of oil pressure. Michael Schumacher took over the lead of the race. One lap later, Minardi driver Marc Gené also retired with an engine failure.
After Trulli's pit stop on lap 28, Arrows driver Jos Verstappen was initially in third place for a few laps behind Michael Schumacher and Coulthard. After his stop, however, he had to give up this position to Fisichella. The two Williams drivers seemed to be driving around the last point. Ralf Schumacher came back to the track in sixth place after his pit stop ahead of Verstappen. Button initially fell behind the Arrows driver, but was able to overtake him on lap 57. Trulli came back on the track after his second stop in front of Ralf Schumacher in fifth place.
Finally, Michael Schumacher was the first pilot to cross the finish line ahead of Coulthard and Fisichella. Frentzen, Trulli, Ralf Schumacher and Button initially occupied places four to seven. After the race there was the information that all of the first six pilots except Fisichella were to be disqualified. After a second investigation by the FIA, however, there were only anomalies on Coulthard's racing car, which was finally disqualified because the front wing was seven millimeters too low. Fisichella thus took second place.
Michael Schumacher was able to extend his lead in the world championship. Fisichella took second place ahead of Barrichello. Ferrari's lead also increased with the designers. Benetton-Supertec and Jordan-Mugen followed in second and third place.
