The 2015 Brazilian Grand Prix (officially Formula 1 Grande Prêmio Petrobras do Brasil 2015 ) took place on November 15th at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace in São Paulo and was the 18th race of the 2015 Formula 1 World Championship .

report

backgrounds

After the Mexican Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings by 73 points over Nico Rosberg and 104 points over Sebastian Vettel . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 243 points and Williams with 374 points . Both Hamilton and Mercedes were already established as world champions ahead of time.

At the Brazilian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

The two DRS zones remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone began 20 meters after the Senna-S , the measuring point was at the apex of curve 2 , the right -hand bend of the Senna-S . The measuring point for the second DRS zone, which was on the start-finish straight , was 30 meters after the Junção , and the DRS could then be activated 60 meters after turn 15 , the last bend before the start-finish line.

Pastor Maldonado , Max Verstappen (five each), Marcus Ericsson , Nico Hülkenberg (four each), Kimi Räikkönen , Vettel (three), Jenson Button , Romain Grosjean , Hamilton, Daniil Kwjat and Sergio Pérez (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points .

With Felipe Massa , Vettel (twice each), Räikkönen, Button and Rosberg (once each), five former winners competed in this race.

Since the Lotus F1 Team had liabilities of around 330,000 euros to the race organizer from the past, the team was initially prevented from entering the pits. Only after Bernie Ecclestone settled the claims were the team members allowed to enter the box on Thursday afternoon.

Daniel Ricciardo used the upgraded version of the Renault Energy F1 2015 for the first time at the weekend , for which Renault used seven of the twelve tokens available for the season . Renault used four more tokens for a new turbocharger, which Ricciardo did not use.

The race commissioners were Silvia Bellot (ESP), Felipe Giaffone (BRA), Paul Gutjahr (CHE) and Mika Salo (FIN).

training

In the first free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time in 1: 13.543 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Vettel.

In the second free practice, Rosberg was fastest with a lap time of 1: 12.385 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Vettel. Training had to be interrupted when Fernando Alonso parked his car on the side of the track with an engine failure. Despite the waving of red flags , Valtteri Bottas passed Felipe Nasr . Bottas received a starting place penalty of three places for the race and two penalty points.

In the third free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time in 1: 12.070 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Vettel.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton was fastest. Alonso reported a loss of power on his car over the pit radio and, on instruction, parked it at the edge of the track without achieving a lap time and did not qualify for the race. He was allowed to take part in the race because he was fast enough in free practice. Shortly before the end of the section, Massa, who was on a timed lap, almost collided with Nasr at the exit of the Mergulho , who was on the racing line with his Sauber and suddenly slowed down the pace. Massa had to move to the run-off zone to avoid a collision. The race stewards interpreted the incident as a disability, Nasr received a starting place penalty in the amount of three places for the race and two penalty points. The Manor pilots, Button and Maldonado were eliminated.

The second qualifying segment (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. Hamilton was again fastest. Grosjean, Ericsson, Pérez, Carlos Sainz jr. and Nasr were eliminated.

The last section lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Rosberg set the fastest time and thus achieved pole position in front of Hamilton and Vettel. It was his fifth pole position in a row, his 21st pole position in the Formula 1 World Championship and the 17th pole position of the season for a Mercedes driver.

Ricciardo was moved ten positions back to use the eighth internal combustion engine.

run

Sainz parked his car on the way to the starting grid at the edge of the track. He was dragged back into the pit lane from where he had to start the race.

Rosberg stayed ahead of Hamilton, Vettel and Raikkonen at the start. Behind it was the well-started Bottas ahead of Kwjat and Hulkenberg. Sainz parked his vehicle at the edge of the track with a technical problem with the drive during the first lap. Ricciardo came to the pits at the end of the fourth lap to change tires and fell back to last place.

Hülkenberg pitted at the end of lap ten to change tires, Kwjat, Massa, Pérez and Grosjean a lap later. Hulkenberg passed Kwjat through the earlier stop. Another lap later, Bottas stopped, who stayed ahead of Hulkenberg.

On lap 13, Raikkonen was the first of the four drivers in the lead to come to the pits to change tires, Rosberg and Vettel one more lap later. Hamilton therefore took over the lead, but fell back to second place after his pit stop on the following lap. After the first pit stops, Rosberg was still ahead of Hamilton, Vettel, Raikkonen and Bottas. Behind was Maldonado, who started on the harder tire compound and therefore had not yet been to the tire change, ahead of Hulkenberg, Kwjat, Massa and Verstappen.

Hamilton shortened the gap to Rosberg and was in the DRS window, but was initially unable to attack. Kwjat and Massa passed Maldonado one after the other, who pitted to change tires at the end of lap 25. In midfield there was a battle between Pérez, Verstappen and Grosjean for ninth place. After a few laps, Verstappen passed Pérez and Grosjean took the opportunity to also pass.

Vettel was the first driver to change tires at the end of lap 32, and Rosberg also stopped one lap later, so that Hamilton took the lead again. Rosberg had so much lead over Raikkonen that he stayed in second place ahead of him. Hamilton changed his tires one lap later and fell right behind Raikkonen, whom he overtook one lap later. Maldonado and Ericsson collided in the first corner and Ericsson spun. The stewards saw the fault at Maldonado for the collision and imposed a five-second time penalty and one penalty point.

Vettel caught up with Raikkonen, who had not been to the pits for the second time. Raikkonen let him pass without a fight. Grosjean meanwhile passed Verstappen and was now in tenth place.

On lap 48, Vettel made the third pit stop, Rosberg and Hamilton each lap later. The positions at the top remained unchanged. Hamilton and Rosberg subsequently drove the fastest laps of the race. Nasr and Maldonado fought for ninth place, Maldonado then passed after several attacks on lap 57. One lap later, Grosjean, who drove the final phase on the softer tire compound, also overtook Nasr. Verstappen was also on the softer tire compound and attacked Nasr, who was able to defend himself at first, but had to let Verstappen go a lap later. Meanwhile, Grosjean passed his team-mate Maldonado. Pérez and Ricciardo also overtook Nasr one lap later.

Verstappen passed Maldonado with three laps before the finish and was thus in tenth place, Ricciardo overtook Pérez. There were no more shifts at the top.

Rosberg won the race ahead of Hamilton and Vettel. It was the fifth win of the season for Rosberg and the 15th for Mercedes, the eleventh being a double victory. The top 10 were completed by Raikkonen, Bottas, Hülkenberg, Kwjat, Massa, Grosjean and Verstappen.

With one race before the end of the season, Rosberg was second and Vettel third in the drivers' championship. In the constructors' championship, the first five places were already firmly assigned to Mercedes, Ferrari, Williams, Red Bull and Force India .

After the race, Massa was disqualified because the official measurement of tire pressure and temperature before the race showed an excessive value at the rear right. All of the following drivers moved up one place, Grosjean, Verstappen and Maldonado achieved the last places in the top 10.
