The 2014 Brazilian Grand Prix (officially Formula 1 Grande Prêmio do Brasil 2014 ) took place on November 9th at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace in São Paulo and was the 18th race of the 2014 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After the US Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with 24 points from Nico Rosberg and 102 points from Daniel Ricciardo . Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 245 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault and with 370 points ahead of Williams . Due to the fact that double points are awarded in the last race of the season, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix , for the first time in the history of the Formula 1 World Championship, a decision on the drivers' world championship in the penultimate race is not possible due to the point constellation. Regardless of the outcome of the race, Hamilton and Rosberg will still have a chance of winning the world title in the last race.

At the Brazilian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions . Originally Pirelli had planned to use the tire compounds and P Zero Hard (orange) and P Zero Medium (white), but this had met criticism from several pilots due to safety concerns.

Some changes have been made to the route. The entire track, including the pit lane, was re-asphalted and grooves were milled so that rainwater can drain off better. The entrance to the pit lane, which now consists of a chicane, was relocated a few meters to the left, and the pit wall at turn 15 was moved further away from the ideal line for safety reasons. In addition, a flat curb was installed on the inside of this curve to prevent the curve from being shortened. The exit from the pit lane was also moved to the left in order to create space for a run-off zone on the outside of turn 2 .

The two DRS zones remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone began 20 meters after the Senna-S , the measuring point was at the apex of curve 2 , the right -hand bend of the Senna-S . The measuring point for the second DRS zone, which was on the start-finish straight , was 30 meters after the Junção , and the DRS could then be activated 60 meters after turn 15 , the last bend before the start-finish line.

Pastor Maldonado (five), Kevin Magnussen (four), Jean-Éric Vergne (three), Valtteri Bottas , Romain Grosjean , Sergio Pérez , Adrian Sutil (two each) and Esteban Gutiérrez (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Felipe Massa , Sebastian Vettel (twice each), Kimi Räikkönen and Jenson Button (once each), four former winners competed in this race. Button, Massa and Vettel hadn't scored another victory after their last win at the Brazilian Grand Prix and this race.

The race stewards were Silvia Bellot (ESP), Garry Connelly (AUS), Felipe Giaffone (BRA) and Andrew Mallalieu (BDS).

As in the US Grand Prix, Caterham and Marussia did not take part in this race. Marussia ceased operations during the race weekend.

training

In the first free practice, Rosberg set the fastest time ahead of Hamilton and Daniil Kwjat . Button and Gutiérrez did not bet time. At Button, damage to the ERS was responsible for the failure, at Gutiérrez electrical problems in the drive unit area. Three test drivers were used in this training session. Felipe Nasr took over the Williams from Bottas, Max Verstappen the Toro Rosso from Vergne and Daniel Juncadella took over the Force India from Pérez. In this training session, Magnussen tested titanium underbody strips, which cause sparks and will be introduced as standard from 2015. Juncadella had an accident in the Curva do Laranjihna , in which the vehicle was damaged in the area of the engine so much that Pérez could not drive as planned in the second free practice. Juncadella's accident triggered an interruption.

In the second free practice, Rosberg kept the lead over Hamilton. Raikkonen came third. The training was interrupted three times. Vergne fell out with a technical defect at the beginning of the training. The second interruption triggered Alonso, whose engine suffered a defect and caught fire. In the third free practice session, the first two positions remained unchanged again, with Massa taking third place.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 14 drivers reached the next part. Rosberg drove the fastest lap. The Lotus pilots as well as Pérez and Vergne were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Rosberg was the fastest. The Sauber pilots as well as Kwjat and Nico Hülkenberg were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Rosberg finally achieved pole position ahead of Hamilton, Massa and Bottas. While the first four drivers were within three tenths of a second, the remaining six drivers, who were within two tenths of a second, were about one second behind pole time.

Pérez and Kwjat were each moved seven positions back because of starting place penalties that were pronounced at the US Grand Prix.

run

Sutil did not start on the grid and started from the pit lane. At the start, Rosberg stayed ahead of Hamilton. Vettel fell behind Alonso and Ricciardo after a driving error on the first lap. The first pit stop phase began on the fifth lap. Third-placed Massa pitted first from the leading group. He drove too fast through the pit lane, so that he received a five-second time penalty. Rosberg pitted on the seventh lap and fell behind Grosjean. Hamilton followed a lap later and came back on the track behind Rosberg. Hülkenberg took the lead from Kwjat and Grosjean, all three drivers had started on the harder tire compound. Rosberg overtook the three drivers within the next lap and thereby increased his lead over Hamilton, who did not overtake the three drivers as quickly. Grosjean lost a few more positions. He stayed on the track until lap 25 before being the last driver to make the first stop.

On lap 25, Massa began the second pit stop phase. Despite the time penalty, he stayed ahead after Bottas 'pit stop, who was behind him, as Bottas' belt was tightened during the pit stop and he lost around twelve seconds in the process. Rosberg pitted again before Hamilton. Hamilton tried to pull out enough cushion on Rosberg with fast laps that he would stay in the lead after his own pit stop and drove the fastest lap of the race to date. However, he slipped off the track on the following lap in Descida do Lago and lost around ten seconds. At the end of the lap he went into the pit lane to change tires so that Rosberg regained the lead and was now around eight seconds ahead of Hamilton. Räikkönen and Hülkenberg, who had chosen a different strategy, were in third and fourth place after the stop. Raikkonen pursued a two-stop strategy, and in contrast to most of the other drivers, Hulkenberg only used the harder tires at the beginning. During the second pit stop phase, Pérez was too fast in the pit lane and received a five-second time penalty. Raikkonen lost about seven seconds as his car slipped off the front jack before the right front wheel was fitted. Ricciardo retired on lap 41 with a broken suspension.

Hamilton caught up with Rosberg lap after lap and reduced the gap. At the third and final pit stop, Rosberg was again the first Mercedes driver to pit and retained his lead after Hamilton's stop. On his third stop, Massa mistakenly drove into the McLaren pit, where the mechanics were waiting for Magnussen. However, since the Williams box was right behind it, he didn't lose too much time.

In the 62nd round there was a three-way battle between Raikkonen, Button and Vettel. Raikkonen lost both positions against his opponents, who completed one more stop and thus had fresher tires. While Grosjean was eliminated with an engine failure, there was a duel between Ferrari drivers Raikkonen and Alonso in the final phase. In the end, Alonso prevailed in the DRS zone with fresher tires. Hamilton was about a second behind Rosberg for the last 18 laps of the race. However, he did not attempt to overtake. Hamilton regularly set the fastest time in the first sector, but Rosberg was so fast in the middle sector that he had a sufficient lead over Hamilton on the start-finish and back straight.

Rosberg won the race ahead of Hamilton and Massa. Button was fourth, Vettel fifth. Alonso, Raikkonen, Hülkenberg and Bottas completed the top 10.

In both ratings, the first three positions remained unchanged. Hamilton went into the last race of the season with 17 points ahead of Rosberg. At this point, Rosberg could no longer become world champion on his own, as a second place in the last race would be sufficient for Hamilton. Third placed Ricciardo was the first driver after this race whose final position was certain. The constructors' championship had already been decided in favor of Mercedes before the race. After this race, Red Bull was determined to be second.
