report

background

After the Austrian Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with 29 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 82 points ahead of Daniel Ricciardo . Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 158 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault and with 203 points ahead of Ferrari .

At the British Grand Prix, Pirelli made the tire compounds P Zero Hard (orange) and P Zero Medium (white) available to the drivers , as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

There were two DRS zones, zone one began 30 meters after Aintree Corner and the distance was measured 25 meters before Village Corner . The second DRS zone was on Hangar Straight and began 55 meters after the chapel , the measuring point was in the Maggots .

Compared to last year, the wall on the inside of the curve at the end of Wellington Straight has been lengthened, and the artificial turf has been removed at the exits of the curves Aintree Corner , Woodcote and Copse . In addition, the drainage system around the route has been improved.

Felipe Massa started at this Grand Prix for the 200th time in Formula 1.

Jules Bianchi , Pastor Maldonado (four each), Valtteri Bottas , Marcus Ericsson , Kevin Magnussen and Adrian Sutil (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Fernando Alonso (twice), Kimi Räikkönen , Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Rosberg (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Gerd Ennser (DEU), Nigel Mansell (GBR), Tim Mayer (USA) and Richard Norbury (GBR) acted as race commissioners .

In the run-up to the race it became known that Tony Fernandes had sold the Caterham F1 Team to an Arab-Swiss consortium. At the British Grand Prix, Christijan Albers took over the position of team boss, Colin Kolles was appointed race director. The previous Caterham team boss Cyril Abiteboul returned to the engine manufacturer Renault , where he replaced Jean-Michel Jalinier as Managing Director . Jalinier has worked for Renault in various positions since 1985 and resigned for personal reasons.

training

In the first free practice, Rosberg set the fastest lap ahead of his teammates Hamilton and Alonso. Susie Wolff took over the Williams from Bottas and Daniel Juncadella took over the Force India from Nico Hülkenberg . Both were used for the first time at a Grand Prix weekend. With Wolff, a woman took part in a Formula 1 racing weekend for the first time since Giovanna Amati at the 1992 Brazilian Grand Prix . Additionally went Giedo van der Garde the Sauber of Sutil and Robin Frijns the Caterham of Kamui Kobayashi . Both Williams retired early in this training. Wolff's vehicle suffered an engine failure, and Massa had to stop training after an accident due to a driving error. At Caterham, too, there were problems with both vehicles. Frijns had a technical defect, Ericsson drove into the gravel. Except for Maldonado, who had to park his racing car with a technical problem, all drivers drove for a time.

In the second free practice, Hamilton took the lead from Rosberg. Alonso stayed third. Hamilton retired after an hour with an engine failure. It rained in the third free practice. Most drivers only completed a few laps in order to save rain tires. The three fastest drivers to date even completely foregone a timed lap. Vettel was the fastest ahead of Ricciardo and Maldonado.

Qualifying

The qualifying took place under rainy conditions. It consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Rosberg was the fastest. Both Caterham drivers failed to qualify, but were subsequently allowed to start the race because they were fast enough in practice. Besides them, the Ferrari and Williams drivers did not make it into the next segment. Sutil got stuck in the gravel so that qualifying was over for him.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton was the fastest. Esteban Gutiérrez turned into the gravel and was eliminated. Maldonado stopped without fuel and was therefore excluded from the ranking. According to his team, Lotus , the fuel consumption of Maldonado was incorrectly calculated by the engine manufacturer Renault. The Sauber, Lotus and Marussia pilots did not make it into the next segment. With places 12 and 13, Marussia achieved the team's best qualification result so far. For the first time, both Marussia were the two fastest cars with a Ferrari engine at this event.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. The track was so dry in light rain that the drivers drove on slicks. After all drivers except Vettel had completed one lap in the initial phase, the rain increased. Hamilton was leading at this point in front of Rosberg and Sergio Pérez . Shortly before the end it stopped raining again, so that faster times were possible in the third sector and the five drivers who still set a time at the end led the classification. Rosberg achieved pole position in front of Vettel and Jenson Button . Hamilton, who previously led, abandoned his last attempt because he no longer believed in an improvement after a poor first sector.

At the end of the formation lap, Alonso did not stop in time and was therefore a few meters from his permitted starting position. There was smoke development on the Williams von Massa, Massa fell back to last place at the start due to a clutch problem. After the race, Massa complained about the slow performance lap because, in his opinion, this had triggered the clutch problems on his vehicle. Vettel also lost a few places at the start of position two and fell back to fifth position, while Rosberg retained his lead in front of Button, Magnussen and Hamilton. Pérez and Jean-Éric Vergne collided on the first corner, Pérez spun and fell back to the end of the field. When leaving the arena , Raikkonen went off the track. He drove back at high speed through the run-off zone, lost control of his vehicle and violently hit a guardrail; Ferrari later announced that the impact force was 47  g . He turned back on the track; Kobayashi approaching from behind at high speed was only able to avoid a collision by dodging onto the lawn next to the track. The approaching Massa, who drove directly behind Kobayashi, forced his vehicle to spin, which resulted in only a slight collision with the Raikkonen vehicle, in which Massa's left rear tire and the drive shaft were damaged. Massa was praised by many media representatives, including David Coulthard and Eddie Jordan , for his quick response, with which he avoided a serious collision . Raikkonen left the damaged car on his own and hobbled into the medical car. He was taken to the hospital where he was diagnosed with severe bruising of the ankle. Raikkonen then canceled his participation in the test drives in the week after the race. According to the doctors, a start at the next Grand Prix was not at risk.

The race was suspended for about an hour because of a damaged guardrail that had to be replaced. The drivers therefore stopped on the start-finish straight; repair work and tire changes were allowed to be carried out. Massa made it back to the starting grid, but his vehicle was pushed back into the pits as it was too badly damaged. Max Chilton , whose Marussia had been damaged by a piece of rubble from Raikkonen's Ferrari, did not return to the grid, but to the pits, committing a rule violation that was punished with a drive-through penalty. In addition, when the race resumed, Chilton did not leave the pits straight away and was one lap behind. The collision between Pérez and Vergne in the first corner was investigated by the race stewards and no penalty was imposed. Alonso was given a 5-second time penalty for not maintaining his correct starting position. Alonso switched from the harder to the softer tire compound during the break, and both Red Bull drivers opted for opposing strategies.

The race was restarted for one lap behind the safety car and then released with a flying start. Rosberg set himself apart directly from his opponents. Hamilton drove next to Magnussen in Copse and overtook him as Magnussen drove through the run-off zone. Shortly afterwards, Hamilton also passed Button and finished second behind his team-mate. Bottas overtook Hülkenberg and was in sixth place, Alonso passed Daniil Kwjat and Ricciardo in eighth. The Mercedes drivers set themselves apart from the rest of the field at the front, Rosberg was about five seconds ahead of Hamilton. On the ninth lap there was a collision between Maldonado and Gutiérrez when braking in front of the Vale . Maldonado's Lotus was briefly levered into the air, but it drove on. Gutiérrez slipped into the gravel bed shortly afterwards with a damaged wheel suspension and was eliminated. The collision was investigated by the race stewards and Gutiérrez was moved three positions back for the next race. A few laps after this incident, Ericsson retired with a defective left front suspension.

Meanwhile, Vettel pitted for the first time and switched back to the softer tire compound. Bottas was thus behind the McLaren drivers and a few laps later passed Magnussen in fourth and a little later past Button in third. In the meantime, Alonso had overtaken Hülkenberg and benefited from Ricciardo's pit stop, so that he passed Magnussen on one lap to Bottas. Hamilton caught up with Rosberg and reduced the gap to two seconds until he pitted on lap 18 and fell behind Hamilton. Shortly after his pit stop, Rosberg reported transmission problems to the Mercedes team by radio, but drove on and achieved the fastest lap of the race to date. Hamilton stayed on the track until lap 25 and switched to the harder mixture, so that theoretically he could have contested the race without another pit stop. He fell back to second place behind Rosberg and shortly thereafter achieved the fastest race lap. Vettel had meanwhile passed Magnussen, Alonso stayed ahead of Magnussen after completing his 5-second penalty.

On lap 28, Rosberg slowed down and finally parked his car with a technical problem, so that Hamilton took the lead from Bottas. Bottas pitted for his only pit stop shortly afterwards and kept second position, but was over 40 seconds behind Hamilton. Ricciardo, Button, Alonso and Vettel were behind the two leaders in this phase. Vettel put pressure on Alonso with fresher tires and dueled him over several laps. Both drivers left the track briefly and complained about the other over the pit radio. In the 47th lap, Vettel sat down on the former start-finish straight next to Alonso and - when Alonso gave in - pulled past him in the Copse . In the meantime, Hamilton had been in the pits for the second time, as his advantage allowed another tire change without any problems. Maldonado dropped out with a technical defect a few laps before the end, but was still classified.

Hamilton won the race ahead of Bottas and Ricciardo, who kept Button behind in the closing stages. Vettel was fifth ahead of Alonso. The top 10 were completed by Magnussen, Hülkenberg, Kwjat and Vergne. Bottas achieved his best result to date with second place. For the first time since the Spanish Grand Prix in 2013 - and thus for over a year - no German pilot made it into the top three.

In the drivers and constructors' world championships, the first three positions remained unchanged. Hamilton reduced the gap to Rosberg to four points.

Remarks
  1. Chilton was moved five positions back due to a premature gear change.
  2. Gutiérrez was moved ten positions back due to an uncertain clearance during a pit stop at the Austrian Grand Prix. In addition, he received a starting place penalty of five positions for an early gear change.
  3. Maldonado was excluded from the qualifying because he was left without petrol at the end of Q2 and thus had less than the liter of fuel in the tank required by the regulations.
