Reports
background
Jacques Laffite broke the previous record set by Graham Hill at the 1975 Brazilian Grand Prix with his 176th Grand Prix participation .
For the first time since his serious car accident in March, team boss Frank Williams was able to watch a race right on the track.
training
The two Williams drivers Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell dominated the training and thus qualified for the two starting positions in the front row in front of Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger and the two McLaren teammates Keke Rosberg and Alain Prost .
run
At the start, Mansell lost a few places due to a technical problem on his Williams FW11 . Further down the field, an accident occurred that was triggered by Thierry Boutsen losing control of his Arrows A8 , deviating from the track to the left and bouncing back after hitting the guardrails. Stefan Johansson unintentionally pushed Jacques Laffite off the track during an abrupt evasive attempt, so that he crashed head-on into the guardrails. Piercarlo Ghinzani , Christian Danner , Allen Berg as well as both Minardi pilots and both Zakspeed drivers collided with Boutsen's car. The race was canceled. Despite the proximity of the accident site to the pit lane, driver colleague Jonathan Palmer , who was also involved in the accident, was the first doctor to take care of the injured Laffite. He was brought to the hospital by helicopter with severe broken legs. Since his recovery took several months, this was the end of his Formula 1 career.
After around an hour and a half of cleaning up and waiting for the rescue helicopter to return, the race was restarted. Mansell took part in a T-Car and finished the first lap in third behind Piquet and Berger. On the third lap he overtook the Austrian and henceforth reduced the gap to his team-mate Piquet. After his team-mate Rosberg retired, Prost was fifth behind Senna.
On lap 23, Piquet made a mistake while shifting gears, which Mansell promptly took advantage of to take the lead. He defended this position to the finish and thereby took the lead in the world championship. He was unable to complete the lap of honor due to a lack of fuel and was brought to the podium in a safety vehicle, where he almost collapsed, visibly exhausted, and therefore had to be supported.
Prost finished third behind Piquet. René Arnoux came fourth ahead of the two Tyrrell drivers Martin Brundle and Philippe Streiff .
