Reports
background
The field of participants corresponded exactly to that of the French Grand Prix two weeks earlier.
In addition to Patrick Tambay , Derek Warwick has now also been equipped with the further developed Renault RE60B .
Eddie Cheever resorted to an improved version of the Alfa Romeo 184T from the previous year, as the 185T had proven to be non-competitive in the first half of the season.
training
Keke Rosberg was the first pilot to complete a lap of the 4.719-kilometer high-speed course at an average speed of more than 160 miles per hour. He qualified for pole position in front of Nelson Piquet , Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna . The third row of the grid was formed by Nigel Mansell and Michele Alboreto , who was the leader in the drivers' world championship .
22 of the total of 26 pilots completed their fastest training laps with average speeds of over 240 km / h, the fastest 11 even with more than 250 km / h.
run
A very good start put Senna in the lead ahead of Rosberg, Mansell and Prost. Behind Andrea de Cesaris , Nelson Piquet, who started from second place, followed in sixth place.
In the first corner, Stefan Johansson collided with Patrick Tambay. This led to another collision between Piercarlo Ghinzani and Philippe Alliot . The race was over for all four pilots involved, with Johansson being the only one who could still make the way to his pit.
By the fifth lap, de Cesaris fought his way past Prost and Mansell to third place. In lap nine, Prost, who had passed Mansell shortly before, passed de Cesaris again. When Rosberg had to give up on lap 16 due to a turbocharger failure, Prost came second.
From the 22nd lap on, Niki Lauda was in third place behind Senna and Prost, who was quickly catching up on him. Lauda retired on lap 58 due to an electrical fault, so that Alboreto was able to take third place. On the same lap, Prost took the lead as Senna was struggling with engine problems. The Brazilian was able to counter spontaneously, but retired on lap 60 due to a lack of fuel.
Alain Prost won with one lap ahead of Michele Alboreto and Jacques Laffite , who had overtaken Nelson Piquet with four laps to go. Derek Warwick and Marc Surer finished fifth and sixth.
