The 1979 British Grand Prix took place on July 14th at Silverstone and was the ninth race of the 1979 World Automobile Championship .

Reports

background

The further developed Williams FW07 had proven to be very competitive in test drives that took place between the French Grand Prix and the ninth round of the World Championship in Great Britain. McLaren had meanwhile completed a first copy of the M29 , which should replace the problematic M28 . The Merzario A4 , a wing car based on the Kauhsen WK004 , made its debut with Team Merzario , which had taken over two chassis and equipment from the Willi Kauhsen Racing Team in the past few weeks . It replaced Merzario's own A3 design . The Lotus team , on the other hand, finally returned to last year's model Lotus 79 , as the disadvantages of the new Type 80 were too serious.

The Alfa Romeo -Einsatzteam Autodelta decided not to participate in the British Grand Prix.

training

Just ahead of Renault driver Jean-Pierre Jabouille , Alan Jones secured the first pole position of his Grand Prix career in the Williams . Nelson Piquet and the second Williams factory driver Clay Regazzoni formed the second row from René Arnoux and Niki Lauda .

The two Ferrari pilots Jody Scheckter and Gilles Villeneuve occupied after training places 11 and 13. FIG.

Hans-Joachim Stuck and Arturo Merzario failed to qualify for one of the 24 starting places.

run

Jones converted his pole position into a lead over Jabouille and Regazzoni. Piquet, who had initially been in fourth place, retired on the second lap due to a spin. His position was then taken by his teammate Lauda. However, this fell behind Arnoux and Villeneuve on the following lap.

On the 17th lap, Regazzoni overtook Jabouille, who was handicapped by tire problems and shortly afterwards headed for the pits to have his tires changed. The pit stop failed, so the Frenchman had to visit his team again. His engine overheated and he dropped out. This put Arnoux in third place ahead of Scheckter and Villeneuve.

On lap 39, Alan Jones, who had been leading up to that point, had to give up the race due to an overheated engine. His teammate Clay Regazzoni took over the lead and secured the first win for the up-and-coming Williams team. René Arnoux finished second ahead of Jean-Pierre Jarier , who overtook Jody Scheckter and John Watson in the final third of the race . Scheckter lost fourth place to Watson on the penultimate lap. Jacky Ickx received the last World Championship point of the day in sixth place.

It was Regazzoni’s first Grand Prix victory since the US Grand Prix in 1976 , his fifth overall and also his last.
