The 1979 German Grand Prix took place on July 29th in Hockenheim and was the tenth race of the 1979 Automobile World Championship .

Reports

background

With the exception of Jean-Pierre Jarier , who had to be replaced by Geoff Lees due to illness , the same field of drivers competed in the tenth World Championship round of the year as two weeks earlier at the British Grand Prix .

training

On the fast track at Hockenheim, Renault driver Jean-Pierre Jabouille secured pole position for the third time this season and shared the front row with Alan Jones , who was able to implement the potential of the further developed Williams FW07 in this training session better than his Teammate Clay Regazzoni , who qualified for sixth place. In between were three pilots of different makes: Jacques Laffite , Nelson Piquet and Jody Scheckter .

run

Jones converted his pole position into a lead ahead of Jabouille, Laffite, Scheckter and Regazzoni. On the eighth lap, Jabouille spun while trying to take the lead and was eliminated.

By the 13th lap Regazzoni passed Scheckter and Laffite and thus took second place behind his team-mate Jones. For the rest of the race, the two held their positions, securing the first one-two in the Williams team history .

Gilles Villeneuve , who had been in fifth place behind Laffite and Scheckter for a long time, had to give up this position to Niki Lauda for a short time on lap 27 , as he had to go to the pits due to a defect in his rear wing. When Lauda retired in the following lap due to an engine failure, Villeneuve took the place again for five laps until he was ousted by Nelson Piquet and fell further back. When his teammate Lauda had to give up three laps before the end due to an engine failure, John Watson finally achieved fifth place ahead of Jochen Mass .
