Reports
background
During the four-week break between the British Grand Prix and the ninth World Championship round, test drives took place in Hockenheim. In the course of this, Alfa Romeo driver Patrick Depailler had a fatal accident. For unknown reasons, he lost control of his car in the east curve, which at that time was still without a chicane, and crashed into the unprotected lane at high speed. The material for the erection of tire stacks and safety fences had already been delivered by this time and was packed behind the guard rails. The installation of these safety devices, which could have reduced the force of the impact, was only planned for the German GP ten days later and thus took place after the accident.
Alfa Romeo initially did not reoccupy the free cockpit and therefore entered with only one car. The ATS Racing Team, on the other hand, briefly expanded its commitment to two cars, giving Harald Ertl the opportunity for a Formula 1 comeback.
training
Due to the wet track, none of the drivers achieved a lap time of less than two minutes during the first qualifying session on Friday. On Saturday, all drivers succeeded in doing this with significantly more favorable track conditions.
Alan Jones completed the fastest training lap and qualified for pole position in front of the regained Renault of Jean-Pierre Jabouille and René Arnoux . Carlos Reutemann followed in the second Williams ahead of Jacques Laffite and Nelson Piquet .
While the team Renault seemed to have returned to his usual form, the disappointed Ferrari pilots Gilles Villeneuve and Jody Scheckter again with places 16 and 21st
run
Although Jones had the best start, Jabouille was able to take the lead on the first of the long Hockenheimer straight through the forest thanks to his turbo engine. Arnoux remained third, followed by the two Ligier drivers Didier Pironi and Jacques Laffite and Fittipaldi driver Keke Rosberg . After a pit stop on the third lap due to a defective rear wing, it fell back to the end of the field and was canceled on the eighth lap due to a damaged wheel bearing. On lap 19, Pironi had to give up the race in the pits. The reason was a broken drive shaft.
Within a few moments, both Renaults fell out of the race on laps 26 and 27 due to engine damage. This put Jones in the lead ahead of Laffite and Reutemann. At this point, Piquet was already well behind, ahead of Elio de Angelis and John Watson .
After a pit stop with a tire change, Jones dropped to third place on lap 41. Although he was still the fastest driver in the field, he could no longer prevent Laffite from winning ahead of Reutemann. Piquet finished fourth. Bruno Giacomelli and Gilles Villeneuve , profiting from the technical failures of Watson and de Angelis, finished fifth and sixth.
