The 1998 Grand Prix of Germany (officially the Grand Mobil 1 Prize of Germany ) took place on August 2nd at the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim and was the eleventh round of the 1998 Formula 1 World Championship . Mika Häkkinen won the race ahead of David Coulthard and Jacques Villeneuve .
report
background
Rosset was not allowed to start the race from the doctors because of health problems, but he was allowed to participate in the training sessions. Williams and Ferrari brought a modified version of the previous car to the race weekend. Both new cars had a longer wheelbase. Furthermore, the Ferrari had a new braking system, whereupon McLaren protested. Ferrari removed the braking system on Saturday in order to start legally.
McLaren confirmed Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard as drivers for next year on Saturday.
training
Friday training
Häkkinen was the only driver to achieve a time below 1:44 minutes with 1: 43.946 minutes. Coulthard, Hill, Alesi, Michael Schumacher, Irvine and Villeneuve followed. All drivers were within six seconds.
Saturday training
Häkkinen had to admit defeat to his teammate Coulthard by 0.169 seconds, who achieved the fastest lap time in the second practice with 1: 43.006 minutes. It was followed by Villeneuve and Hill. All drivers, with the exception of Panis, who did not set a time, were placed within five and a half seconds.
Qualifying
Rosset did not attend the session because of the health problems. With a best time of 1: 41.838 minutes, Mika Häkkinen achieved pole position, around half a second ahead of his team-mate David Coulthard and Jacques Villeneuve. Michael Schumacher could not find his way around after problems with the new car and switched back to the old car. Due to the little experience with the car on the track, he only qualified in ninth place. All qualified drivers were within five and a half seconds.
Warm-up
In the warm-up, Mercedes again achieved the fastest time through Coulthard, who was the fastest with 1: 44.812 minutes. Ralf Schumacher, Mika Häkkinen and Jacques Villeneuve followed. All drivers were placed within four seconds.
run
Before the start of the race it started to rain slightly. The race was dominated by Mercedes, both cars moved straight away from the start on positions one and two. Only Ralf Schumacher, who started with little gasoline in the tank, could almost keep up with the Silver Arrows. Panis received a stop-and-go penalty for a jump start. Ralf Schumacher pitted on lap 14 to make his first of two stops. He came back on track in tenth. Jos Verstappen had to give up the race on lap 24 due to transmission problems, three laps later his team-mate Barrichello retired with the same defect. Later, Nakano and Herbert also gave up because of the gearbox. At the only stop, Häkkinen refueled too little and had to drive to save fuel. This enabled Coulthard to approach within half a second, closely followed by Villeneuve in third place.
